F10->iMac G3->noob install problems

Hi all,
I have to very basic questions for you that will help me get going for a while (I hope!)

So I have an iMac G3/500MHz/256MB and I burned the 8 cdroms for F10 installation, All of them passed the verification test.

In the first part of the install, if I go DEFAULT I get to a black screen and the CD keeps spinning. I then used the "linux text" option an the "method=cdrom". Then everything seems fine until I get the :
ERROR: asr: /dev/hda (Input/output error)
ERROR: ddf1: /dev/hda (Input/output error)

So here are the two questions:

1-Are these messages normal?
2-Was I supposed to format the disk in some kind of Linux disk file format before installation? If so how do I access the disk format tools from the install disks?

It looks like it can't read your harddrive /dev/hda is your harddrive. If you didn't get to the option to format it. If you did and are not dual booting be sure your firmware is up todate first this can only be done in osx (maybe mac os9) If you get the option to manually configure your partitions do so. I have many partitions and even though I selected free space it wanted to wipe the wrong ones!
