Custom Live CD & Plymouth

I'm at the final(hopefully) hurdle in putting this all together.
My last task is to enable the full Plymouth Graphical (not the 3 colour bars at the bottom of the screen) on the Live CD.
I have done it successfully on my desktop but as the Live CD does not use a conventional initrd, the step of updating the initrd to use the new/modified theme fails miserably.

However I have tried to get the default graphical login to work on the Live Cd.
I modified the live.py file to add vga=792 to the grub boot command but still no joy.

My questions are therefore.
1) Can the Live CD display a full Graphical Boot using Plymouth?
2) would I need to use the nomodeset option on the grub command as well as vga=xxx ?
3) If 1) & 2) are positive, how can I do the equivalent of
/usr/libexec/plymouth/plymouth-update-initrd

Thanks
Stephen D
