Fedora 10: Problem with IP/ethernet

Hi,

I've installed F10. My machine has been assigned a static address. So I want to setup my machine to use the static address. I changed /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth0 and it looks like this:

Code:
# Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708 Gigabit Ethernet
DEVICE=eth0
HWADDR=00:22:19:ad:3b:5c
BOOTPROTO=none
TYPE=Ethernet
ONBOOT=no
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=no
IPV6INIT=no
NM_CONTROLLED=yes
NETMASK=255.255.252.0
IPADDR=153.104.63.200
GATEWAY=153.104.60.1
Then I said /sbin/service NetworkManger restart to restart the eth0 interface. However, In that little network icon on the top right of the screen (next to date), I get two options: Auto Ehternet and System eth0.

For some reason, after restarting it always goes to Auto Ethernet and the machine uses DHCP to get a new IP. If I click on system Eth0, the machine gets the static IP.

1. I always want to use the static IP. How can I set this in Fedora so that it never does Auto Ethernet? What preference/config file do I have to set?

2. In static IP mode, I'm having problems with DNS name resolution. If I say nslookup a.b.c.d it can't find any information. nslookup works fine in DHCP. How can I fix this with the static IP case?

I had specified the DNS servers in the DNS tab in Network but they don't seem to be helping...

I appreciate any quick response. I've wasted a day trying to solve these issues.

I've always made my changes in /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-xxx for my static info, but it seems like that's the same thing(I have the same info in both locations at least). Have you tried using this config outside of NetworkManager? Do you have the correct nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf?

Change the line:
Code:
NM_CONTROLLED=yes
to
Code:
NM_CONTROLLED=no
reboot, then go back and manage it from the System--> Administration --> Network gui, including specifying dns entries, gateway, mask etc.

Hi

Thanks for responding. I finally solved this issue. I turned off the NetworkManager from the service pane. Then on Network, I applied all the data and deselected "Controlled by Network manager" and enabled "Enable when device starts". Now everything works very well.

Thanks a lot.

Re: Fedora 10: Problem with IP/ethernet

Before I joined they are using Fedora 5 OS.I upgrade fedora 5 to fedora 10 & fedora 12.Installation was done perfectly & It is working nice also.

In my office I have Three default gateways which are 192.168.1.1/192.168.1.2/192.168.1.3 that three are configured dynamically to 24 port switch.I selected DHCP option at the time of installation.It getting IP address and default gateway from switch and it was working nicely.

But sometimes my Internet connection was going slow.That time I need to configure my system as statically with other default gateway.I applied three procedures to change IP address & Default gateway.that all are effects Temporarily only not permanently.Once I rebooted the system again it will take DHCP Ip address. I need permanent solution for setting up static IP for particular system.

I know three procedures I will mentioned below.

procedure 1:-

#su -
root pwd:
$setup
select network configuration
select device eth0
select static option and
entered IP address,network mask and gateway
select save & exit

# /etc/init.d/network restart

now it effect static Ip address Once I reboot my system I getting DHCP only.

procedure 2:-

selected system ----> Administration -------> network and then entered Root password
then one window opened for network-configuration there I selected eth0
and change the settings as static with manually enterd IP address , subnet mask and Default gateway.
save and restart the network.

It also works temporally only.

procedure 3:-

I edit configuration fle
$vim /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0;
I changed the settings as per my reqiurement.
I edit resolv.conf file also
$vim /etc/resolv.conf
I entered DNS addresses here
I switch on the network in all run levels with the help of below mentioned statement
$chkconfig network on
I restart the network with the help of below mentioned statement
$service network restart.

It will also work Temporally only not Permanently.

Please help me for this problem.Kindly revert back with proper solution from this.

Thanking you for giving support..................
