F10 64bit freezes on compiz, video, xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver, and others

Don't know what happened, I generally run openbox by itself and call gnome-appearance-properties to set my gtk themes. But after doing the latest yum update I have some serious problems.

I can't run the gnome-settings-daemon, i can't set gtk themes or wallpaper using gnome-appearance (i'm now doing this with nitrogen and manual config of the gtkrc-2.0 file. If I do, X completely freezes, and even ctrl alt backspace doesn't work. I have to hold the power button to reboot and start over. Using alternate programs for volume, wallpaper and manually doing the gtk settings is no big deal, but other areas are.

I can't really lock my computer anymore as every screensaver app freezes the computer in the same state as well. Same thing happens in gnome-screensaver as well as xscreensaver.

so i booted into Gnome, in which I have compiz enabled... same thing, within seconds of me logging in.

So back to openbox with all gnome stuff turned off, if I play videos it will randomly lock up doing the same thing (including flash videos on the web, so any random site that displays flash ad that gets through my ad blockers, has the potential to freeze X for me).

Any one got any ideas on where to look to resolve the issue? I'm really trying to avoid a reinstall as i have a lot of apps I needed to compile from source due to Fedora's repo's lacking.

I have been having similar issues. I started with a fresh install of F10 running Gnome and the first day had my first freeze. I switched to Pekwm and ran fine for a few days, then had a freeze. I then installed XFCE and continued to have freezes. Eventually moved to openbox and continue to have freezes.

Dell Vostro 1400
All Intel chipsets
USB mouse, USB Printer
Running on A/C, not battery

Apps usually open:
Firefox
Gvim
xterm
conky
mpd

I thought maybe it was an issue with Firefox, but looking at those threads, it seems it is an issue with Xorg, evdev, and the kernel.

I am running updates (first time since movig to openbox two weeks ago) to see if that helps the situation.

actually it's a non issue. Apparently there's something flaky with my motherboard and video (on board or via pci).

I have zero video now, even of the bios... whether using vga or dvi on my onboard card, or a seperate pci card, and i've tried a crt and a lcd monitor. same result no matter what.
