Belkin F5D7050 USB wireless problem (FC10)

Hi,

I've spent hours trying to sort this one out and its becoming annoying. Before we start I am a newbie to networking with linux. I play with apache configs and I've done bits and pieces with unix shell scripting and compiling but not much else.

Anyway, my first linux machine, downloaded FC10 and installed. Worked a treat wireless up and running without any issues. Allowed updates to happen, on next boot wireless gone. Several hours later I decide to start again to try and find out what happened. Fresh install, all up and running nicely.

I let the system install all the updates again, then on reboot wireless isn't working. I'm using a Belkin F5D7050 USB.

If I visit NetworkManager in the top bar the 'enable wireless' tickbox is gone.
In system->network->devices there's just 'eth0 inactive'
If I go to the hardware tab I see
| Ethernet | pan0
VIA technologies | Ethernet | eth0
Belkin componenets F5D7050A Wireless | Wireless | wlan0
rt73usb | Wireless | wlan0
Can anyone help with what is going on here? Like i said handholding will be nessecary and I'll provide as much info as possible.

Doing 'lsusb' shows the devide (Bus 002 Device 003: ID 050d:705a Belkin Comp.....)

Thanks, Lloyd.

Hello lloydwatkin,

I don't know what has gone wrong there. But apparently nobody else knows either. I don't use Ralink chipsets, so I can just tell you what I would try if I did and this happened to me.
  1. Confirm that the driver module is loading. The list produced by the following command should include the rt73usb module and probably a couple more Ralink driver modules...
    Code:
    /sbin/lsmod | sort
  2. If the module is not loading, try manually loading it and see what that does...
    Code:
    su
    /sbin/modprobe rt73usb
  3. Confirm that the rt73usb firmware is installed. Both of the following should list something related to the firmware required by the driver...
    Code:
    rpm -qa | grep rt73
    ls /lib/firmware | grep rt73
  4. If you are (or were) using NetworkManager, then for now I would forget about the Network Configuration utility (system-config-network) and not worry about what you see or don't see there.

  5. If everything so far checked out, then ensure the NetworkManager service is enabled. Then try restarting it and look for your network (router SSID) in NetworkManager's list of available networks (left-click its panel tray icon)...
    Code:
    su
    chkconfig NetworkManager on
    service NetworkManager restart
  6. If your router is not broadcasting its SSID, then I recommend turning that on. If you insist that it be turned off, then left-click the NetworkManager panel tray icon and choose "Connect to hidden wireless network".

  7. If the device is external, see if there is a difference in booting with it connected and disconnected.

  8. Make sure that there is not some switch disabling the radio or its antenna. Either a real switch somewhere on the device or something in BIOS. It's even not unheard of for Windows to disable a wireless card as it shuts down making the card not work when the computer is rebooted into Linux. That can be disabled.
I'm sorta out of ideas now. No promises, of course, for any of this. They're just things that would occur to me to try.

I include a couple of other commands suggested by a colleague:

Code:
[root@deepexplorer network-scripts]# more ifcfg-wlan0
# Please read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt
# for the documentation of these parameters.
TYPE=Wireless
DEVICE=wlan0
HWADDR=00:1c:df:9e:30:7a
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=no
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=yes
IPV6INIT=no
ESSID=
CHANNEL=
MODE=Managed
RATE=auto
I can confirm that is the correct mac address (must of been entered automatically)

After a reinstall I note that in my hardward config I no longer have rt73usb listed as wlan0 hardware just the 'Belkin.....' wlan0.

Also when I look at /sbin/lsmod the only difference is the lack of rt2500usb in the list.

I'm running updates again to see what happens...

I allowed the machine to perform all updates last night, everything is working fine this morning.

Therefore I put it down to something that dangermouse's autoten does while performing the install. I'll get together all the info I can and post it up on his forum for his information.

Thanks for the help I received via the forum and #fedora irc.

Lloyd
