Red face wifi/widows lan issue

Hi,
I am impressed with fedora - it loads quick and I have tried few linux programs over the last couple of days and I think I will stick with fedora.
However, I get a setroubleshoot browser error when attempting to connect to my wireless router, this is part of the error:

Detailed DescriptionSELinux denied access requested by consoletype. It is not expected that this access is required by consoletype and this access may signal an intrusion attempt. It is also possible that the specific version or configuration of the application is causing it to require additional access. Allowing AccessSometimes labeling problems can cause SELinux denials. You could try to restore the default system file context for /var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-wlan0.leases, restorecon -v '/var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-wlan0.leases' If this does not work, there is currently no automatic way to allow this access. Instead, you can generate a local policy module to allow this access - see FAQ Or you can disable SELinux protection altogether. Disabling SELinux protection is not recommended. Please file a bug report against this package.

The wifi card is being picked up by netconfig and is active.

Also I cannot connect to my windows machines. i do not have samba loaded or configured, I guess that could be part of that problem.

Any suggestions to either of my issues will be appreciated.

Tim

set selinux to "Permissive" mode, you'll still get the error messages but it won't disallow the functionality.

If it works after doing that then you can try fixing the selinux context as suggested and re-enabling selinux.

Forgive me as I am sort-of new to linux, but how do set permissive mode?

Thanks for the reply,

Tim

If you're using Gnome you can set it from System -> Administration -> SELinux Management.

And reboot

You could also edit the file "/etc/selinux/config"

Sorry, can you expand on "that did not work", after disabling selinux you get another problem?

expanding on description

setting permissive mode in selinux. I set selinux from "enforcing" to "permissive." when i rebooted the machine, my etho or wired connection no longer functioned and nor did my wireless which has never functioned.

the original intent of my post on this forum was to get wireless enabled.

after setting to permissive mode - i had no internet nor lan connection. i tried to repair the etho connection but to no avail; therefore, my only option was to reinstall fedora. it was not a hassle as i had just installed it prior to making this original post.

i now have etho (wired) working but still do not have wifi which i would like to have.

note: system/admin/network device control does not open when clicked on from the tool bar at the top. is there an option to enable this? could this be part of the problem?

thanks, tim

Are you running F10, that device should be auto detected?

In all versions of fedora when my wifi device wouldn't work I used ndiswrapper. The annoying problem is that you have the *.inf and *sys files on a windows install cd but in Fedora you can't install ndiswrapper because you have no internet connection.

I can baby step you through the whole process if you get lost.

Yes I installed F10. I burnt the livecd.iso and installed from the live cd.

I am a little lost about your statement, "on a windows install cd."

I do have and internet connection via etho, or wired connection.

I have had problems with ndiswrapper before, so I really do not know where to start with that and may need help.

I previously had suse 11.1 installed and suse picked-up my wifi card, wireless router or network, and everyone elses around. However, their where some issues with suse11.1 and video/codecs, but these issues were solved using fedora. the help and support is much better with fedora. But now I have wireless issues...I guess with linux you can't have your cake and eat it to.

sorry, I misposted from another message.

I have exactly the same wifi chipset in an Acer Aspire One and it works flawlesssly in F10 by default, so I cannot understand why you are having a problem.

I would not recommend ndiswrapper for this, but since you claim windows works much better I suggested it as an option, but it is certainly a poor solution to this.

However, ndiwrapper is straightforward if the driver works with fedora's 4k kernel stack in 32bit, otherwise it's a pain. Are you using 32bit? If so enable rpmfusion then do

Code:
su -
yum install kmod-ndiswrapper
Then find the *.inf and *.sys windows drivers on your wifi install disk and do

Code:
ndiswrapper -i <path to>/*.inf
echo "alias wlan0 ndiswrapper" >> /etc/modprobe.conf
depmod
modprobe ndiswrapper
iwconfig wlan0
If it's working then NetworkManager should pick it up

pitfalls:

probably have to blacklist the current driver
