Is there a replacement for the 'entirely new and enhanced replacement' of top written by James C. Warner <warnerjc@worldnet.att.net> that is distributed with fedora core 2 (specifically on 64 bit)?
Even better, can we get the old top back? Has anyone produced an RPM with a replacement for the 'entirely new and enhanced replacement'?
No offense to the author, but this
new version of top is hardly enhanced and fails to duplicate even the most trivial output from the
old version of top. Specifically, threads are hidden behind process leaders and are not revealed by the specifications in the manual page. The system wide defaults are broken (i.e. not interpreted as documented) out of the box for 64 bit fedora core 2. I am willing to believe that James Warner's code did not contain these problems and that they arose during integration to fedora core 2 - regardless of origin, however, they are tremendous and serious.
FWIW: By old top I mean the pre-fedora top distributed in RH6-9 - probably the one written by Roger Binns. Again, without offense, I am not interested in a top that has a lengthy section of its man page entitled: STUPID TRICKS Sampler. Give me the core functionally that works - not tricks for idle sysadmins, crackers and miscreants.
