yum update error - rawhide!!!

OK - I'm somewhat of a newby to this forum so if this is in the wrong place or a FAQ please forgive.

I had installed updates to my fd10.9x mainly because I didn't know what I was doing and I had enabled as the software sources "Fedora -Rawhide". Ha,ha - now I older (by a coupleof days) and wiser (not much but maybe a little) and I've unchecked the Fedora Rawhide - - but I now cannot update anything using either the Admin gui or even using the following terminal command sequence because I get see the following errors:

yum clean all

Loaded plugins: dellsysidplugin2, refresh-pachagekit
Cleaning up Everything

yum update

Loaded plugins: dellsysidplugin2, refreshppackagekit
fedora/metalink
Could not parse metalink https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/me...0.91&arch=i386 error was
File //var/cache/yum/fedora/metalink.xml.tmp is NOT XML
Error: File //var/cache/yum/fedora/metalink.xml doesnot exist

I also get some longer list of errors that end with these same lines when I try to use the Admin gui to do do updates or even to search for a specific package to install.

I also get this same message when I simply issue the the" yum repolist" command

I saw somewhere in these forums something about rebuilding the __db* files located here:
/var/lib/rpm/__db

and I followed that advice but it didn't change anything for me.

Am I now permanently stuck in fc10.91 (rawhide) h-ll or is there a way back to redemption so I can simply update my system without checking the rawhide repo?????

Reinstall a stable version of Fedora, either F9 or F10. Fedora 10.9 or F11 alpha is a snapshot of Rawhide, if you don't want to deal with a constantly changing development version you shouldn't have installed it.

OK - how do I do that?

OK Mark - that's cool and I lernt my lesson about rawhide - but do I hafta wipeout everything and start all over by reinstalling everything again with all my apps, data etc., or is there a way to roll back without all of this work?

I've got about three different vers. of fc....... cores that are listed in the GRUB bootloader by default in the boot sequence and this working fc10.91 is on the bottom of the list and the top two are listed as fc-11 and they fail to boot properly so I think that I have only one shot at this without redoing the whole thing over again - - -or is itpossible that there are other pre3vious fc cores in the GRUB loader that I don't see by defualt???

This was covered before, had you searched. There is (was?) a problem with the metalink feature.
Edit the repo file for rawhide in /etc/yum.repos.d/ to comment out the metalink line and uncomment the normal mirrorlist one and you should be good.

Telling someone to re-install because of a minor issue with a simple fix.. are you from Microsoft support?

Agreed, and it is kind of rude, and kind of like saying "Hey, leave the Test versions to the pro's newb"

OP: Don't stop using rawhide because of this issue, though take a quick flick through the other topics for the fix

Trying to repair the rpm database won't fix this issue. You should only do that when instructed.

The problem you have is in the cached version on your repos.

1) check /etc/yum/repos.d
2 check /var/cache/yum/fedora/

Make sure they have the repos you want, and make sure they match.

You could rename all the repo files in /etc/yum/repos.d to .old, or put a . in front of the files (makes them hidden). This will be like wiping the slate clean.

Please read the original message. It says:

The test releases can be updated only from Rawhide. The only way to go back from alpha test/Rawhide to a stable release is a complete re-install. The "simple fix" you suggested does not help in the problem that the original poster stated.

Hummm

I am the original poster - and a newbie. Apparently I also do have problems explaining what the problem is. However there is never a need to give snarky responses to questions as it only makes others think less of you whether your answer is ultimately is right or wrong.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement to stick with the updates as I have no problems with this advice. What I meant in the original post was that by simply unchecking the rawhide software source in the gui leads me to numerous .py script errors that I believe are ultimately are traceable to the

Error: File //var/cache/yum/fedora/metalink.xml does not exist

error as well as the metalink error mentioned.

Thanks for the help.

Ok folks, let's all calm down a bit. The first error could most easily be fixed by commenting out the metalink line as described. I"m not sure what happened with these later errors.

The metalink error is now fixed by the way.
