copying files
I amworking on moving over my files from my old box to my new. Most copy over, but for a lot, I get a message that the file cant be read. What causes this and how do I overcome it? thanks.

what are you trying to copy, system files or just data?
the problem is most likely a permission confilct. if you are trying to coy system files or files that were not created by the user you currently are, you are going to have problems. you can either change the permission of the files by becoming (login as) the owner of the file and right click the file and click on the permissions tab an edit away, or you can use the "chmod" and "chown" tools from the command line.
the easiest solution, however, is to log in as root and everything should work, but be warned loging in as root gives you full system acces and is discouraged because you can easily render you system useless by pressing the wrong key.

I am trying to copy them from one linux box to my new FC2 box. I went into FC2 as root...same problem. Not only do I get the message that the file cant be read or copied, on some directories, I am not seeing the files that are in there. I am stumped.

I think I am going to stop for the night. For my wifes profile, I was able to copy over all of her evolution mail with no problem. For mine, some stuff would not copy. I seem to have gotten everything except my archive folder. Some files on my wifes profile also wouldnt copy. Seems random, although I did notice a lot of times it was .zip files or .pdf files. When I tried copying over my mozilla/firefox stuff, I could not see the files that were in my firefox/default folder. But, when I copied the bookmarks files from the firefox folder to another folder on my old machine, I was then able to see it and copy it to my new box. Like I said, being root didnt make any difference. i do not see any permission differences between files in a folder that will copy and those that wont. Thanks for the help!

set your old hd as slave (change jumper)
First run: hwbrowser
Check your "Hard Drives" for partitions you need to mount.
You say your old slave HD has FC2 installed.
You can simply mount your old FC2 partition.
Like this: mount /dev/hdaX /mnt/empty_dir
(where X is number of FC2 partition found with hwbrowser + make an empty directory in /mnt)
You can copy files from old FC2 partition mounted in /mnt/empty_dir to your new FC2 HD.

I am transferring via Samba from my MDK 9.1 box to my new FC2 box. 2 Different machines, 2 different hard drives. I do not have FC2 on my old drive, only on my brand new drive in my new machine. thanks.

make sure you have the samba users setup properly (with necessary permisions). this is not a good idea, but it should temporarily solve the problem: make all samba users default to root. to do this, edit you /etc/samba/smbusers or the owner of the files
remember to change you settings back

I am not sure I understand what you mean exactly, and do I do this on both machines? Thanks.
