Counter Strike not starting

I'm trying to play Counterstrike on my T60. I did a fresh install on a 10 GB partition, downloaded all updates and patches, and then installed wine from the repos. Steam successfully installed and when I run it I can see everything - lists of servers, steam news, and everything else - but when I try to start Counterstrike it fails to start. How can I trouble shoot this issue?

Start it from the terminal, and see if the output contains something usefull. If not, try to change some of the wine-settings with winecfg. If thats not working either, then somebody else will sure have a smart idea
