Fedora 9 GUI will not load, Init 3 and Init 5 fail

I did a yum update and restarted. After Fedora, loading, instead of loading the GUI, it gave me terminal. Okay, so I did a init 5. This happens:

Starting irq balance:
Mounting other filesystems: [OK]
Starting anacron: [OK]

then it just sits there and nothing loads.

same with init 3

Any ideas?

also my /etc/inittab is set to id:5:initdefault:

I was able to get xfce to load, but the gnome gui is still dead. Any ideas on why, or how I can just have xfce load by default?

you can try and check /var/log/messages for any suspicious messages

I finally got gnome back. All I did was reinstall gnome and now gnome boots up right from the start.

yum remove gnome-desktop.i386
yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

i didn't see anything in /var/log, but thank you for the input.
