Spyware Problem

My f9 appears to be infected with spyware; unexpected annoying pop up ads, for instance, frequently appear in my Firefox.

Despite it was not recommended, I tried using Spybot, via Wine. To an degree, it appeared to work, but it found nothing and I suspect that it missed a lot.

So, is there a better spyware scanner, for Linux, available?

I doubt that this is spyware installed on your system. Try the FireFox extensions 'NoScript' and 'AdBlockPlus'.

I clicked: Tools>Add Ons>Extensions, but the screen was blank.

Any idea as to how I can populate it?

Tools=>Add-Ons=>Get AddOns

You must re-start FireFox after installing the stuff.

P.S. Both of those extensions require (very easy) setup.

or go the the web sites of the two addons
-- add block plus --
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
-- no-script --
http://noscript.net/
and read the sites for how to use/configure the addons

the symptoms you describe hardly qualifies the mal-ware you are having to deal with as "spy-ware"...it seems that , what you are facing is an ad-ware...but infact , it isnt really an ad-ware either......it just one of those annoying pop-ups!!

thats why i simply use opera...

spy-bot would be absolutely useless on linux...all spy-bot would do is scan your .wine/drive_c directory in your /home/<your username>

but i wouldn't be worried about spy-wares or ad-wares on a linux with SELinux...in permissive mode...

its one of linux's specialities...

so i wouldn't really be worried...
