GDM Lack of Progress

In Fedora 9, we told we'd be getting a new and improved GDM. It turned out to be terribly ugly (compare to KDM) and completely inconfigurable. I thought it'd be improved by the time Fedora 10 rolled around. But it is more or less the same. Does anyone know what is going on? When will the new GDM have the functionality of the old one? When will we have a tool to change the background, the theme and get rid of the ugly grey box.

Other distros (Ubuntu) are still using GDM 2.20 because they recognize the latest ones are lacking.

If KDM or other distros seem to fit your needs better... maybe you should try them?

Evening, guy.

In order:

1) Yes. If you would like to monitor such things more effectively, subscribe to the devels mailing list and track changes there while they're hot off the grill.

2) I don't know ... but I'll bet the developers do. Again, try the devel list.

3) Same answer as (2).

In short, this forum is for users helping users, and you may run across somebody who knows here, but your odds are a whole lot better over on the devel list. Follow my signature link to the link for the communicate with fedora page, and then follow the bread crumbs from there.

You've got some valid questions. This just isn't the right place to expect a fast answer that isn't heavily laced with an invitation to leave ... or some pretty stiff sarcasm.

And this isn't that sarcasm, nor an invitation to leave. It's just a suggestion to dig a wee bit deeper for the quality info you're wanting.

Dan

edit: Sorry Dan, I posted as you were. I retracted my post as I do not want to appear to be challenging you.

Umm, that's not the answer to the question that was asked. If you don't know the answer then why did you bother to read the thread and reply?

I read the email, Sean. And I really don't think you were challenging me. Methinks we're all of pretty much the same opinion on the issue. The current GDM seems to be suffering from the same nanny-notion trends that are infecting a lot of things Linux these days.

Whether it's cyclic, or we're simply facing the evolution of the product as it outgrows dinosaurs like you and me is a point of contention for another thread.

I'll be pretty tickled myself when (and if) GDM does become theme-able again, but in the mean time I suspect it'd be less than constructive for me to get sour and piddle into my fellow user's ears about something they nor I can really change here on the forum.

There seems to be some confusion as to whom I was replying to. I read the forum in "Hybrid Mode" so replies to individuals get threaded under their posts so it's clear who I'm talking to. I've edited my post to clear up any confusion.

And as far as I'm concerned it was a legitimate question, and one a lot of us want to know the answer to and telling someone to change distros is not what we need to hear!

Obviously, as Dan said, we're as much in the dark about it here as anyone and the best place to ask is on the mailing lists, etc.

Moved over to Fedora Focus as it's not really a support question.

LOL - I didn't really intend to annoy people. I was just hoping someone who knew the answer (aka a dev) also read this forum. I will post to the dev list.

In response to why I doni't use KDM: I do in some cases (because the default KDM in F10 is really beautiful), but it is incompatible with the gnome fast-user-switcher, and so not good if you share a computer among many users. Perhaps someone knows how to get around this limitation of KDM?

Cheers.

Yeah. Folks around here are a bit sensitive to this kind of thing. You wouldn't believe some of the "drama-llama" type "I'm going back to Ubuntu because ..." posts we've seen.

Suffice it to say we try to pour a circle of salt around them as fast as possible to stop the infestation ... and the gathered villagers carrying pitchforks and torches.
