I'm not currently running Linux on my main PC. But I will be in the near future.

But this is what my living room looks like. I live in a one bedroom apt.

In the pictures you can see my main PC, my big iron server, an old PIII PC (not in use), my notebook, and part of my Casio workstation keyboard.

Yeah, brilliant!

I managed one of them long time ago.

This was called that time Compaq but right now it is an HP proliant server!
I've been thinking about to get one of them like that:

This is actually "cheap" for a real dual xeon and usually all of them has got a U320 Adaptec controller sometimes with RAID too.

Anyway this is really good toy.
It is good for Linux.

Oh by the way, don't forget to optimize the coolers, cos it can be really loud if it is not patched well! (all coolers run on 100% if the case/mainboard are not taught well)

Actually it's a HP ProLiant DL580 G2.

Specs:

Quad Intel 2.2ghz MP Xeons hyperthreaded! Shows 8 cpu's in the F9 sys monitor!
8gb of PC-1600 ECC/registered ram 4x2gb dimms
Two dual port gigabit Intel nic cards.
Four 36.4 gb Compaq 10k scsi drives on a smart array 5i controller in raid 5
2.6.27.9 PAE kernel

Runs Fedora 9 really well! lol

Fans spinup to 100% at post for testing. Then down to about 50% midpost. Then down to about 25% before booting the OS. So is fairly quiet considering what it is.

Was purchased on ebay sans drives, sleds, and power cords. Scsi drives are from ebay also. Power cables came from a company in North Canton, OH.

Evidently it is not around £150.

Take care with FC10 if you will install it cos it has an SCSI issue.
When you finished with the install the kernel can be boot cos of the scsi_wait_scan left from initramdisk.

I'm not planning on shifting to Fedora 10 anytime soon. It's going to be a game server.

And total cost including shipping was approximately 188.67 GBP

Server itself came with no drives, sleds, or power cables $153.50 USD shipped.

Drives and sleds cost $72.60 USD shipped.

Power cables were $36.16 USD shipped.

Total came to $262.26 USD

These things vary greatly in price according to what they come with etc.

You might check the UK version of ebay and see what you can find.

It is much more than that in England.

I had a look the US ebay and that prices much better than the UK one.

Anyway I was thinking to build up a game server too about a year ago but the idea was dropped cos of the ISP rack price.

What kind of game are you going to run on that "nuclear power station" ?

Maybe lots of virtual machines?

I'm really wondering about that. I saw on a Hungarian site the Virtual machined Windows has got a directX issue. ( cos of the virtual environment )

So Linux or Windows games or booth?

It's a Windows game. But the server binaries run in Linux. Can't name the game...sorry! Maybe in the near future.

D3d in VM's isn't supported the last I heard. Just 2D

Ah I see.
It is going to be a hosted game server on a "business" way.

I saw on Linux.com the cedega software on Linux able to run nearly 50 Windows games.

Anyway it is going to be a good hardware for any game.

i've got fedora9 (used to be debian4) running on a couple of compaq DL380 g3's at work, dual 1ghz p3, 2gb ram, 4x36gb scsi, they work like a charm powered 24/7 for about 3 years so far, wouldn't like one in my bedroom though.

the cd-rom drives are useless - when i installed fc9 i did a netinst and it barely even managed to read that 120mb cd!

if you're going to co-locate it, you should have stuck with 1u, it'll be cheaper due to space used, and cost less in power too.

I don't have any plans to move the server anywhere. And it only gets loud if getting close to full load!

Unfortunately, the server is now idle due to game company problems and no current developement because of the economy!

I now need to find something else for it to do.
