Fedora 10 P3. standard kernel vs. custom build

Hi,

for a college project I installed Fedora 10 (plus cell 3./1 SDK) on my PS3
painless enough with a few helping hints from this forum (thanks all!).

As the PS3 is limited to 256Mb RAM I thought it worth building a custom kernel rather than the stock one provided by the Fedora (via yum update)

I did tweek the custom ps3 kernel config to add support for LVM

I then looked for a benchmark and found the impressive phoronix-test-suite
I just selected the compression tests as they seem the most all round for system performance.

the link shows the custom build gave me some increase in performance but just a little.

stock system is
2.6.27.9-159.fc10.ppc64
custom build is
2.6.29-rc1-01047-g905177e with ps3_def_config

Umm from reading a lot of benchmark stuff online "Online Nagazine" with a lot of benchmarks, realized that different processors are all over the place with different types of tets. SP3 geing gaming you might want to see if you can find a benchmark test that is more aimed at its usage as there may be a huge difference as apposed to compression tests. The ps3 processor may be crappy at compression so a difference in performance may be less noticable.

Omni-Tom: Thank you for your response. You raise a good point but I wouldn't fully agree with you.

Yes there are a lot of different benchmarks and one would need to examine a few more.
but what I am doing here is NOT comparing the Cell to another processor but to compare one kernel build to another on the same processor where the main gain would be system performance.

The Cell's main core is a PPC (like a G4/G5) but these benchmarks don't (can't) take into account the real power of the Cell which is the extra SPUs (a set of GPU like cores).

So I think the compression test to compare kernel builds on a PPC core is fair.

I will, with time, run a larger set of tests from the phoronix test suite and will report them here.
