Installing scientific software on Fedora

hallo everyone, i'm a new member here and also a newbie in linux .by the way we have a geoscientist software called geoframe.in the installation guide it said that the software needs Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS 3 Update 4 (kernel 2.4.21-27.EL) and Oracle 9.2.0.4 for 32-bit Linux (+ Oracle 9i Patch set 9.2.0.6 for 32-bit Linux).

well since we don't have the OS,could we install it (theoritically) under fedora 10 (the latest) system cause as far as i know they were both developed based on the same core.thanks for the answer

Two things:

1: Fedora = Bad choice for mission critical environments or your scientific program. Use CentOS 5.2 instead.

2. If CentOS isn't enough, try using a virtual machine like Virtualbox.

It might work or it might not.
Some installers look at things like the /etc/redhat-release file to see what you are running.
The other problem is that the package MAY be dependent on libraries that have changes since.

Actually Centos 5.2 may be pretty close.

I'll put in my 2 cents for CentOS for stability. I've worked with it a few times at a former job, and it seems to be running my server at least as well as Fedora 8 did. Of course, I've had nary a problem with either distro on my server

There is also Scientific Linux, based on Red Hat, but when I tried to check it just now from Distrowatch my browser gave a ' bad certificate ' warning. Don't know what's going on there, but you might want to ( carefully ) look further.

You can also take a look at Fermi Linux which is Fermilab's version of Scientific Linux:
