My mobo has a built-in Nvidia GEForce MX 400 card and I want to update to the Nvidia drivers.

i am a fresh new linux user myself. i am having trouble asking yum to do anything...
i get this message when i try to pull a #yum -y install firefox or a #yum - y install mozilla-flash
or anything basically. i followed the handbook up to taht part.
Unable to find pid
Gathering header information file(s) from server(s)
Server: Fedora Core 2 - i386 - Base
and.. then it stalls.
either that or i dont get the unable to find pid
but then it still hangs. how long should this take?

great well now i dont know if im screwing something up or its just down.
i need to start installing these "rpm"s and it looked like yum could solve my problem. how do i install them manually or with another program like yum? any how-tos or links would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
(my winxp crashed and burned with all my business stuff on it. i need to start making up for it right away, so im using linux and trying to install some software. even getting firefox with a java plug in would give me a smile right now.)
looks like evn more trouble now...
when i pull a #yum -y update
i get a
Gathering header information file(s) from server(s)
Server: Fedora Core 2 - i386 - Base
Server: Dag RPM Repository for Fedora Core
Error - /var/cache/yum/dag/header.info cannot be found
Please ask your sysadmin to update the headers on this system.
so im thinking i have to pull the ol #rpm --import http://freshrpms.net/packages/RPM-GPG-KEY.txt
but.. i get a
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
error: http://freshrpms.net/packages/RPM-GPG-KEY.txt: import failed.
um.. should i be doing this in root? (im not)
bahrg. please help.

Do a search for "synaptics" in this forum. Someone posted instructions on how to download and install Synaptics as a replacement for yum, apt-get and up2date. It is a GUI based program so you don't have to remember commands and run the risk of getting the syntax wrong.
Only problem is you have to use yum to download and install the program and if yum is still down . . . well, it does not help you much.

I followed the link above but - used the direct link for Firefox since the link in the walk through is old Firefox (0.8). So now I have the 0.9.3.gz file - I save it to /usr/lib.
I then ran the command to extract it which worked fine. However - it now tells me to run the .sh file & then when the installer starts - save the firefox browser in /usr/lib/firefox..even though they forget to mention that /usr/lib/firefox (firefox) does not there, I had to mkdir firefox in /usr/lib in order install the browser at the recommended location.
I think I pretty much got the browser installed manually but it was not as smooth as possible. I will tackle Flash / Java when I get home

With Firefox now as my prefered web browser in Gnome - when I already have firefox windows open but minimized and I have an email with a URL I want to click and open that in a seperate window - I get a windows from Firefox asking me to select a profile - default is already in the box but I can't use it...
Why must I create 2 profiles to just open a different window of Firefox? Is there a fix?

I removed Mozilla since I only use Firefox - I should be able to have one version of Firefox browser open then open an email message and click on the link in the email and then open up another session or maybe even another tab on the exsisting open firefox browser. I should not have to load up another profile to have to Firefox pages up at the same time.

Plugins?
I've been using Mozilla and have installed plugins for flash, mplayer, etc. All is working well. I can watch my movie trailers without any glitches. I have installed firefox as explained, using yum -y install firefox. Firefox is now up and running on my machine, but it has not picked up my plugins from mozilla. Any idea why not? I've tried to copy my plugin folder, but when I type "locate firefox" it says that it is installed in "/root/.mozilla/firefox. " When I cd to that directory there is no plugin folder there. Is this where I should copy it to?

Like Psquared, I'm an old DOS hack jumping into Linux, to inject new life into an old Athlon 700 box. It hasn't been easy and at times downright not fun. First tested FC1, then several Debian distros, then SuSE 9.1. Each went initially well, but ended up leaving a bad taste. Along the way it's become clear that various GUI sysconfig apps were the points of confusion, either because they were buggy or feedback-deficient. Taking a stab at FC2 these past two days, the pattern was repeating.
This thread changed everything!
Many thanks to Harryc and the others. The guidance and links in this thread have opened my eyes to more than just the topic at hand. Yum beats the hell out of Up2date, btw.
Looks like my Linux adventure will succeed. Sorry to post off-topic; this has been such a revelation I had to speak up, Thanks again to all.
