Unhappy Long wait to boot/startup at "UDEV" prompt

Hi - Fedora 9
Today, I note that, when booting Fedora 9 , the machine sits idly for 2-3 minutes at the "udev": enter "I" for Interactive startup" prompt.
What changed?
I disabled SeLinux functionality (not required on single-user system). I can't recall any other change.
After 2-3 minutes it starts doing the right thing, but it never behaved this way.
Any ideas? Perhaps I could revert to SELinux "permissive", but I read that this degrades perf. by 5-10%, ad I really have no need for the feature.
Many thanks
George

Yes, there was one more change: I added a USB memory stick. I think that may be the issue
