fedora 9 gui sluggish on my desktop 945 intel chipset

I have loaded fedora 9 on a IBM lenovo thinkpad desktop pc.
I am using gnome.
The gui is extemely slow and sluggish. I have switched off the compiz wm and replaced it with metacity. Still no change. Applications take a long time to launch.
Also , the glxgears report a fps of 960 to 980. Is that alright.
glxinfo reports Mesa driver being present.
I wish to speed up the gui any suggestions for that ?
thanks in advance

how much system ram do you have 256meg,512meg,1 gig,2 gig,
also glxgears is not a benchmark but a test i get this
Code:
~]$ glxgears
4168 frames in 5.0 seconds = 833.464 FPS
4373 frames in 5.0 seconds = 874.526 FPS
on a nvidia Gforce2 mx400 card( 8 years old) and 1 gig ram
and gnome with compz works just as fine as gnome without and the same for kde with and with out compz running.

whav driver is being used in the xorg.conf
is the driver " intel" or "vesa"
this is what you have?

also for a netpad/netbook not notebook i would not even consider putting fedora 9 or 10 on it
in the first place.
fedora is a system resource HOG . Knoppix might be what i would but on a netpad , or even a min. freebsd install,or a light install of dedain.
