I have the same packages on my system (nVidia GeForce Go 7400).

Do you have a copy of your old xorg.conf file? You could try uninstalling kmod-nvidia and restoring the old file (perhaps using the driver "nv" may work for you), and then reinstalling kmod-nvidia.

I don't know why you're getting a Segmentation Fault...something seems to be wrong with the driver installation, but I could be wrong.

Back up your xorg.conf file just in case..

Go to a text-based login screen (i.e. a virtual terminal..should be Ctrl+Alt+F1).

Log in as root.

Run

Code:
setup
and use the X Configuration utility. See if this works.

I had the same problem. But it worked when I changed "nv" to "nvidia" only after I reinstalled kmod-nvidia. Before that, nvidia display settings said that I wasn't using the nvidia display driver (even though xorg.conf had "nvidia" and not "nv" after the manual edit).

Keep it as vesa, and do

Code:
su -c 'rpm -e kmod-nvidia'
(Make sure you have backed up xorg.conf!!)

Reboot the computer. Now reinstall kmod-nvidia

Code:
su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia'
(Just in case there's a problem booting into X, you can do all this from the command line too just like you used setup.)

EDIT: I think there's a problem with the symbolic links to the driver, when kmod-nvidia is installed. For that reason, when you say "nvidia", it seems to be unable to load that driver.

Nope it still doesn't work
This is what it says in the boot sequence
Code:

nvidia.ko for kernel 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 was not found.ESC[60G[ESC[0;33mWARNI

Is this AFTER the installation?

How many kernel entries do you see in grub? (Based on the output of 'rpm -qa|grep nvidia', you should see only one).

A quick search here will bring up lots of threads that have covered much of this before.

See http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=204752 as a good reference.

I have used that driver guide step by step. It didn't work for me. Tried it again after the purging of the drivers

Can you post the output of

Code:
uname -r
and (once again)

Code:
rpm -qa |grep nvidia
Code:
rpm -qa |grep kernel
here?

[coolgoose@tux ~]$ rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-headers-2.6.27.7-134.fc10.i386
kerneloops-0.12-1.fc10.i386

Merry Christmas to you too mate.

Ok lets see. In your previous post, the error you got was

Code:
Error: Missing Dependency: kernel-uname-r = 2.6.27.9-159.fc10.i686 is needed by package kmod-nvidia-2.6.27.9-159.fc10.i686-177.82-1.fc10.7.i686 (rpmfusion-nonfree-updates)
The output of 'uname -r' is

Code:
[coolgoose@tux ~]$ uname -r
2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686
So you have version 2.6.27.5-117 of the Linux kernel and when you try to install kmod-nvidia, yum attempts to update your existing version, and runs into a dependency conflict because the newer (available) version of kmod-nvidia is for a newer kernel. So, if you are willing to take another adventure, I'd say you should do a

Code:
yum update kernel
Also, once you reboot after updating the kernel (which you should do btw) you should see a new entry in grub corresponding to this new kernel. Boot using that and try installing kmod-nvidia again.

This should fix the problem as far as getting the new kmod-nvidia is concerned. But I should state here that I have an older kernel too and kmod-nvidia is working just fine for me after the initial hiccups I mentioned in my last post.

Updated kernel -> un installed nvidia-kmod -> reboot -> installed nvidia-kmnod -> reboot -> run setup -> reboot -> pff didn't recognise the display, system-config-display -> manually added the lcd type -> log in / log out for resetting the x-server and now it seems to work
Code:
[coolgoose@tux ~]$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
Thanks for the help. Weird that yum didn't automatically marked the kernel for upgrade.

Unless I do a 'yum update' (update all packages), I never see yum marking the kernel for an upgrade automatically although this does work for all other packages. Maybe its got to do with 'kmod'? I don't know. Anyway, have fun.
