Simple email send / receive

I need to build a server to host an app which will receive a VERY low volume of emails and text messages, use structured information in those messages to perform processing and update database(s) and respond with emails and text messasges.

What's a good choice for the mail server?
Is there a single package which will do both email and text messages?

Les
