KDE Broken After Latest F10 Updates
I just did a yum update on my F10 desktop this morning and after a reboot KDE seems to be broken. The update included several xorg and mesa packages. The problem is I get to my GDM login screen OK but when I actually login I see the KDE splash screen, then my screen turns all white for a few seconds, then it goes very, very dark. It is not totally black; I can still barely make out a few things on my screen, but that's about it. XFCE and Gnome desktops seem to work fine. I'm using the proprietary NVidia display driver, but I switched to the generic 'nv' driver and it made no difference. The Xorg.0.log doesn't seem to indicate any issues. I have a pretty generic KDE desktop. I have installed a few additional themes, but that's about it. Not even sure at this point how I can get in and set everything to default to see if I've got a bad setting or something like that.
Anyone else seeing this issue or have suggestions on what to look for?
TIA,
John

Post your xorg.conf file. Actually, you can also check that file yourself for prime suspect #1: Option "BackingStore" ON. Otherwise, it may require digging. F10 w/KDE4 looks good here after all updates, but then I run KDM....

I encountered the exact same problem. I have a temporary solution to get to a working(ish) desktop.
You need to turn off Compositing for kde. (lose your eye candy).
To do this edit
~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc
Change
[Compositing]
Enabled=true
to
[Compositing]
Enabled=false

Thanks, that fixed it for me as well. Do you know if a bug has already been filed anywhere on this?

I don't know if any bugs have been filed. I have not found anything in a day and half of searching on this problem.

I found this link:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166446
By switching from OpenGL to XRender I can re-enable compositing, but effects are sluggish. Looks like this is a KDE bug that has been fixed, but somehow crept into the F10 packages.

Here is how I solved it
in
[root]# cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/
[root]# mv libglx.so libglx.so.bkp
[root]# ln -s nvidia/libglx.so libglx.so
The update of xorg overwrote the symlink to use nvidia glx libs. And it works really well. No Sluggishness
