poor Radeon performance

I have an IBM R40 with the Radeon Mobility M6 LY agp graphics adaptor. The 3D performance is horrible. If I was guessing I bet I don't get 2 fps! I've added these two entries to my xorg.conf file which seemed to help 2D performance, but neither has any effect on 3D performance.

Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"

Changing the AccelMethod to XAA seems to make a small difference in that it appears I may be acheiving 3 or more fps 3D performance.

I'm using the X11 driver included with the distribution for now as I read somewhere on this forum about the pitfalls of using 3rd party drivers. I'm open for any suggestions as to any changes that might be made that give any 3D capabilities or is it just wishful thinking. Hoping some one else has this adaptor that may have knowledge of how to make it work.

Thanks in Advance.

From what I've heard, kms is causing havoc with the radeon drivers. Try disabling it -- kernel parameter "nomodeset" and/or following the instructions in the howto section for removing the radeon module from your initrd -- you can find that in the first post in the sticky thread about fglrx. Ignore the fglrx parts though.

Yeah, I have a Radeon Mobility M7 LW and I don't get good performance with it either.
