Modifying FC10 LiveCD/USB

Hello!

I'm still quite new to Fedora and I have a question about LiveCDs.

I currently run the downloadable Fedora 10 LiveCD over a 1GiG USB-Stick which works just fine,
However on my new EeePC WLAN doesn't seem to be working properly, which the Fedora-website only confirmed - The EeePCs WLAN's not yet supported by Fedora(10?), but it can be fixed with a small patch/update.

I'm a software developer and I like to use my own environment at work, which of course includes Fedora 10 and I love the idea of having most things ready on a USB stick! I currently have all my software portable on a 16GiG stick and the Fedora10 LiveCD on my other stick, it works just fine until I touch my EeePC.

I've read that you can create your own LiveCDs, but since I'm still quite new and pretty much only have the LiveUSB right now, I'd like to know if it's possible to just add a package or in general - modify the LiveCD that you can download from the website?

Thanks in advance!

Hi

You can download the live cd, convert into a live usb with persistence and install the packages that you want in the live usb and use it. Building a custom livecd is fairly easy as well.

# yum install livecd-tools spin-kickstarts liveusb-creator

As I said, I already have the LiveCD/USB running, but can you actually just add packages the way you'd add them on a normal installation? I created a random folder last time and when I used the USB-stick again it was gone...

Thanks for the fast reply!

Hi,

Yes, you can install software or change settings and not lose on reboots but you need to enable support for persistence while creating a live usb. Check the first link for more details.

Oh, that's great! I'm getting there. :-)

I used this tool
https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/
to create my other LiveUSB stick, I didn't need an installed Fedora/RedHat for that.

I suppose "Persistant Overlay" does the same and lets me install things on there aswell, right?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Yes. That's correct. Give ample space to persistence and it should be able to do that. Post back your results.

Ah, I'm currently at work, European, nothing much to do but don't have the resources to try something out here! I'll let you know in a few hours, latest tomorrow if that's fine. :-)

I'll have to reformat my stick and reinstall the LiveCD onto it!
