networking problem

my ISP gives me my internet via PPPoE

i configured my eth0 card...but i dont want NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0 to control it...but if i dont allow NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0 to control it. firefox goes offline and i have to untick offline mode each time i use it and add/remove program programs says that i m offline even though i am online and typing this message as we speak...

how do i get around this problem?

Sorry i can't help but i got the same problem

In system-config-network you can check ppp0 to start on boot. Then you can control it from either System > Administration > Network or from the terminal use

ifup ppp0

to start it (if you don't want it to start on boot) or

ifdown ppp0

to stop it.

You can use the same thing for eth0. Is the DSL line connected straight to your computer from the modem or do you use a router?

it wont autostart at bootup unless its controlled by network manager applet....i use a adsl modem

but that is not my problem at all.

my problem is that firefox always goes to "work offline" mode and add/remove software says that i m not connected to the internet

as an alternative i m using yumex, but i want everything to work perfectly.

Hi,

Same problem i have also faced some time back......If you dont want your network manager to manage your connection then you have to make sure that your PPPoE connection is plugged in at the time of boot coz the system makes the connection at the time of booting...more over you will not be able to connect at the run time....

Now i prefer to let me NM manages my eth0 connection ...Its better then that..

yeah i feel pretty dumb now...all i had to do was disable NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0 and the offline problem and add/remove programs problem is gone.

that did not solve the problem...it continued to keep going offline....

but i found the solution

its not a fedora issue, but a firefox issue....

heres what you gotta do

1.open mozilla
2. type about:config in the URL bar
3. click on i'll be careful i promise
4. use the filer bar to search for toolkit.networkmanager.disable
5. its default value would be "false"
6.click on it to make the value to "true"...
7.close firefox and reopen it
8.walla! no more going to offline mode!!
