    Fedora 10 networking setup

I have a fresh install of Fedora 10 on Dell Dimension 4500.

    Static ip set manually.
    NetworkManager is off
    IPTABLES stopped
    SELinux is disabled but

    I still don't have connection.

I'm unable to ping my router (Unreachable). I can ping localhost.

Strange thing is when I turn off my Modem/Router (Comcast Business Gateway) I have connection, I can access internet. I can ping router, etc. 2 minutes later my connection is gone. Any ideas

    Fedora 10 static IP networking

Fedora 10 messed up Netmask values for static IP's. Check ifconfig.
I had to edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethx (where x is the appropriate #)
    to get the correct values.

Also start the service 'network' . Make sure 'NetworkManager' is disabled (looks like you already did this) .

Check /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethx (where x is the appropriate #) to see if the boot flag is set to yes (mine was no) .

Assume you looked at the active connections with ifconfig? If down you can start with ifup ethx (where x is the appropriate number) .

Is there a reason you can't use DHCP?
Do you have DHCP shut off on the router?
If not is the static IP out of the range of the DHCP server?

rclark > boot flag is set to yes, when i run ifup eth0 i get RTNETLINK answers: File exists

nyjetshead > DHCP is on > I just wanna use static, I've tried with DHCP same issue as described in 1st post. Private IP was in the range.

    Any other suggestions?

If there is no real good reason not to use DHCP then use it, set the interface to start on boot
    in network config.
You can leave NM off if you like, also make sure IPV6 is disabled

After the modem is reset you have access and then is stops, I suspect its a Comcast issue.
Do you have modem connected to a router?

    Static IP
Your IP must be outside the range of DHCP.
How are you setting up your DNS info? If you use DHCP you wont have to set anything your router can be set to provide DNS service for you.

    Thanks nyjethead!
It's not COMCAST issue, I have windows box and centos box connected to router/modem (model SMC 8014) works perfectly with static IPs. I tried UBUNTU LIVE CD and connection works without issues. I think something is wrong in Fedora 10. DNS is in reslov.conf

Did you see the sticky on 5 common issues? (A few more were added afterwards, including one about DNS, I believe.).
    It's in the General Forum.
Oops, the DNS question is here.

Based on the info you just provided yes, there is an issue with DNS and F10.
The workaround is not a good long term solution IE the link Scottro provided.

    Edit:
BTW what does route tell you? just curious if the right info is shown.

Thanks--I have been fighting this problem for 3 days. The strange thing was it would work half-a** so I thought it was something I configured incorrectly. As soon as I implemented the fix it it working great.

    Thanks Again
