Go-OO -- OpenOffice "the next generation"? :D

http://www.linux.com/feature/154364

Quote:
If you run Ubuntu, openSUSE, Debian, or Mandriva, among other distributions, then whenever you run OpenOffice.org you don't run the "official" version, but rather Go-OO, an office suite based on the OpenOffice.org source code. Go-OO includes enhancements and functions that haven't been accepted by Sun, and that may never be, because of licensing, business, or other reasons.
Have you tested that software? is it really better than OpenOffice?
On the official website looks like there are also a YUM repo. is it ok for f10?

thanks!!
bye!!

Ha, I didn't see that. Nice find. I presume this can be installed alongside OOo? I'm gonna give it a whirl.

i have tested it and it is okay with some minor improvements, it is still at version 2.4.x though opposed to the original OOo's 3.x though.

Erm, I've installed the v3 but I can't even find any executables in the packages - I'm scratching my head here. The RPMs dont appear to be built very well - they don't seem to pull in the appropriate dependencies. I'll keep you updated.

Not really getting anywhere and its time for bed...

Short answer is No: it doesn't work on F10. Long answer is yes: it possibly does work but it would require a lot of time to work out the various problems. The problem I'm stuck with right now is:

Code:
$ /opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice
The application cannot be started.
The component manager is not available.
No idea what that means!

Don't we all love well-documented programs with helpful error prompts?

I'll be giving it a spin too, sometime later. I'll let you guys know how that goes.

It works ok in fedora 10, just be sure you install all the packages... as someone told before, the rpms are in bad shape.
With respect to the "official sun build", go-oo has better integration with kde... 3, it uses gstreamer for multimedia support (like fedora build) instead of deprecated "java media framework", have the 3d slide transitions in Impress...
BUT: it is less stable, specially Impress.
Impress is slower and some transitions have huge rendering problems.
There are some minor problems with toolbar positioning, specially with the add ons.
On the other hand, fedora build have problems with some java based extensions, like LanguageTool, several features are disables like word completion in Writer and data series filling in Calc...
That is, I use the oficial sun build and have in parallel the go-oo just in case someone sends me a ppt with music (but I don't know why I waste that space and that time... ).

Just FYI, there was a thread about this in fedora-devel-list a while back and the OpenOffice.org maintainers backport lots of the patches go-oo creates, so the Fedora version of OO.o isn't the same as go-oo, but does include a lot of the same features.

If I remember right there was a survey on Phoronix that compared the "vanilla" packages from official OpenOffice.org page, the ones from Go-OO, and the ones on Fedora. Awsomely, the ones from Fedora won in terms of speed. Fedora OpenOffice.org takes a little more time to open but once it does it is like you have that comcast juice from the comercial touching your OpenOffice install.
