Volume/mute buttons on zd8115 work but dont control the volume

Running Fedora 10 and the volume and mute buttons on my laptop work but dont control the volume. When I push the buttons, the window pops up and the volume bar moves and the mute icon will come up when i push the mute but neither actually do anything.
