Few Problems with FC 2 fresh Instal

Hi
Yesterday after backing up my work I did a fresh instal of FC 2 (laptop details below). I have the folllowing problems:

1. The touch pad works but the double touch or single touch of the pad does not do anything I have to use the pad right and left keys, I also cannot seem to get to any mouse options either to select some new mouse / touch pads

2. I installled only Gnome and KDE but not the X windows server ? , however I get the following error message while trying to log into either root or as user:

"Could Not look up Internet Address for ....
This will prevent Gnome from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding . to the file / etc/hosts

It also gives the following two options

Log in anyway

Try again

This is the eact message without the box or option buttons
While in root it goes ahead and logs in but not so for the user account

What to do ?

Further I guess because something is wrong within the install the functions are not fully running, I can access the internet and the win xp dhcp network but the internet is cranky, logins but does not logout, cannot find of all places www.fedoarforum.org {so here I am on a win machine }.

Finally in the firewall setting I have an option called sit0 what is this , it appear above the eth0 setting.

Thanks

As for the internet issue, have you disabled ipv6? If not, search for that and see if that helps that issue. If you didn't install everything and you get an error message when trying to login, sounds like you should re-install and let it install everything this time.

I recall seeing a few threads in the Laptop forum regarding your Touch Pad issue.

X is a windowing system (server) that provides basic networking protocols and graphic primitives for the various window managers ("graphical interfaces") such as Gnome and KDE. You could use X with out a WM, but you couldn't use a WM with out X.

The error you get should go away once networking (name resolution) is working, but you can add the following entry to /etc/hosts to take care of it yourself....

127.0.0.1 hostname #hostname being the name you get in the error.

As Taylor mentioned, try turning off IPv6 to see if that resolves the problem... it has been known to painfully slow down domain name lookups. Add the following to /etc/modprobe.conf and then run depmod...

alias net-pf-10 off

I think sit0 is a virtual interface used to tunnel IPv4 through IPv6 and might disappear after turning IPv6 off... if not, it's harmless and can be left alone.

Hope that helps!

You've messed up your of hostnames, most likely the /etc/hosts file is missing the 127.0.0.1 localhost line. Ask for details if you need them.
