Bad Monitor Resolution in Fedora 10

I've just installed Fedora 10. The initialization process that occurs on first boot gave me a display off center, with the Forward button off-screen. I finally figured out how to proceed and now get to a normal login screen, but that is off center too. There is a two-inch black area at the left of the screen, and approximately that amount is missing at the right. By clicking on Preferences/Hardware/Screen Resolution, I found that the resolution was set to 1440x900. When I reset it to 1280x960, it centered the display but seems to distort the images slightly.

1. What's the problem, and how do I fix it?

2. If 1440x900 can't be made to work, what do I change to make it use 1280x960 everywhere?

I've looked at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and it says "Unable to locate/open config file".
