F10 xorg locks up w/ ATI X1270

I have installed Fedora 10 on an Averatec 2575.
The install seems to be OK except for the screen locking up periodically.
The laptop itself is fine.

Are there any known problems with the ATI chip?

What can I provide to help troubleshoot?

Try adding NOMODESET to the end of the kernel line in grub.conf.
....QUIET NOMODESET

I've tried xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd-1.2.3-1.5.20081112git.fc10.i386 which did not work. It gave me bands of color from top to bottom
I also tried the proprietary ATI driver. That just gave me a black screen and locked me out of the display/keyboard.

The NOMODESET seems to be stable so far.

Also, I think I'm currently using the stock "radeon" driver.
When the screen locks I'm still able to ssh in.

If I replicate the lockup is there data I can gather that would help someone troubleshoot?

I thought that the nomodeset had fixed this problem, but I'm seeing it again.

I did install the ATI proprietary driver. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the mesa packages to insure that any files mucked up were OK, but I'm going to re-install Fedora to be sure that there's nothing left broken by the proprietary package.

I'll report the results when that's complete. The last output from Xorg.0.log is

My F10 xorg also locks up.
I've just upgraded to the brand new package xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.9.0-61.fc10.i386 and it's worse
It still locks up (with or without nomodeset) and now there is a bug in the font display.

I'm bored of it, and gave up using the radeon xorg driver. I'm back to the old vesa driver, and for now no font display issue and not locked up (yet?).

By the way, my radeon is a X300.
I have another radeon which does not locks up X, but it also has the font display issue.

Still locks up

I re-installed Fedora 10 from scratch and I'm still getting the lockup.
I have nomodeset option included in the kernel boot line. I used that during the install, which went much better, but it hasn't helped the runtime configuration.
Based on another suggestion I saw, I tried running connected to the hardwire network and wireless only. I didn't see a difference.

Exclamation don't upgrade to xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.9.0-62.fc10.i386

I suggest ati users don't upgrade to the new release of: xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.9.0-62.fc10.i386
You could finally have no Xorg at all! See the bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=477048

After one month of Fedora 10, ATI support is still a mess

Ymmv

I installed this package and removed the nomodeset and My Averatec 2575 has been stable for the last 48 hours.

I have an ati X1270. So, this package may not fix your problem if you have a different chipset or laptop, but it has worked well for me so far.
