Fedora 10 on an HP Compaq NW9440 Running Smooth but getting an nVidia Error?

Ok I had to get around a few quirks installing (My laptop no longer likes burned DVD's... even the ones it burns but other computers read them... so I had to use the live cd.) and then remembering how to edit the xorg.conf file in terminal I got most everything working right.

However I noticed a problem when trying to enable the desktop effects, it fails. Then I noticed when logging in that the system reports a boot error and says the nVidia.ko file fails to be found and loaded.

Now I installed the nVidia Beta Drivers as I did with my last install of Fedora 9, and I had no problems. Now I am. I am going to try removing everything and installing the non-beta's and see what happens but I was curious if anyone else was having this issue?

Thanks

Well the above error is handled with going back to the non-beta's however I still can not enable desktop effects and I found another problem.

While loading the nvidia driver it refs to glibc and another string including free() not being found. I will try to copy it all down next boot up but it seems there is always something missing. I installed everything but the development libs for the card... i guess I could do those but I do not think I should have too.

I will keep you posted, if anyone has any idea's please let me know.

Glad to help a fellow nw9440 user.

I found a post that the Files section of xorg.conf must look like this:

Section "Files"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection

in order for desktop effects to work properly. I was able to verify this by not having the three ModulePath lines in the file and enabling the desktop effects. After that my desktop went to black and I had to edit an rc file to get back to normal. Then I subsequently added the three module path lines and all has been rosy for me so far.

Good luck and enjoy,

-pmr

I added them but no luck, I did copy down the boot error though:

Or I thought I did... apparently I did not let me try again.

Enabling the nvidia driver: *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/python: free(): invalid pointer: 0x0013c812

OK, at this point, you might want to take a look at this site: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...ghlight=nvidia and you might also want to get back to as fresh a state as you can get. If you have 4G or more of memory then you might also want to use the -PAE flavors of kmod-nvidia and the kernel.

Bon chance,

What are the PAE flavors? I have 30+ Gigs of space and I just did a clean install... I just wish I did not have to use the live cd as its refusing to read DVD's for some reason atleast my burnt ones.

I will check out that thread. I should hope I do not have to redo everything but if I must I must.

Google for accuracy, but my understanding is that PAE (Physcial Address Exctension) enabled kernels allow for 4G or more of installed RAM. The point to take home is to make sure that the kernel and kmod-nvidia packages are matched, either both -PAE or not. I made the mistake of having a non -PAE kernel and a -PAE kmod-nvidia package which led to a troubleshooting effort.

My experience is that after flailing at a problem for a while, my systems get into a very much unknown (to me) state where I cannot remember what I've installed/removed/updated, with bizarre things happening. So when a new release happens I generally expect to have 2-4 redos. I'm up to three so far with F10/KDE4. Hopefully no more will be necessary as things now seem to be running smoothly.

Enjoy,

-pmr

PAE really made things worse I am trying the akmod's but either I am missing something or that file list is bad as it always says its missing a lib file.... Great.
