Data recovery

After FC10 came out I've decided to install it. I've backed up data from my FC9 installation and did a clean install. I've formatted my ext4 partition (/) in the process.

Now the problem is that during the backup process I forgot about some pictures I had (~3 GB of pictures).

I would like to know if there is a way / tool to recover them. I know the chance is small but it would be much appreciated.

The main problem is I don't know if during the format anaconda did a sweep of the partition or what it did.

Thanks in advance

hi,

Have you tried this: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
Quote:
PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's filesystem has been severely damaged or re-formatted.
I haven't tried this ('coz I don't need...), but I have used the "testdisk" app from the same author, which is a pretty good program to recover partition tables. If you still haven't found a way, you could give it a try.

I've already tried photorec and it recovers pictures. But they are like < 300KB in size (thumbnails and icons). The pictures I need are around 2 MB maybe more. Also it got some pictures like a gif icon which was 8 MB so it's good (finds some stuff) but doesn't work for me.

Been in your position before. problem was I was repairing someone's pc. (Normal boot=BSOD, Safe mode = BSOD also, Installation CD = BSOD) I put the HDD in my computer, it was able to boot, but I found that the HDD infact, had a busted partition table, and all data was pretty much lost. thankfully I have a whole range of tools for problems like this. anyhow. I suggest you read into this:
