Could not update ICEauthority file

Hello everyone,

I have just installed Fedora 10, with full updates. I am using Gnome.

I am unable to login as my user name - Fedora is giving me error message "Unable to update ICEauthority file" and just leaves me at the pretty desktop backupground without access to anything.

I have created a new account and am able to login under the new user name but that dosn't solve my problem of loggin in as the main user.

I was messing around with SAMBA and rebooted when this happend so I believe that the problems are linked.

Funny thing is, I am unable to login from the login screen as ROOT. I get an error message to the effect of Unable to authenticate user... but I can SU - in the secondary user name I created via 'rescue' mode from the disk.

I have googled around and most of the "Could not update ICEauthority" 'stuff' hasnt worked: i.e:

chmod /home/user/.ICEauthority
deleted ICEauthority ... rebooted still gives ICEauthority message trying to login
copied ICEauthority from new user.. rebooted ... still gives ICEauthority error message. ....

what does this ICEauthority even do? .... I have no idea.

EDIT ....

[root@miranda ~]# ls -l /home/spinifex/.ICEauthority
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3840 2008-11-24 16:19 /home/spinifex/.ICEauthority
[root@miranda ~]#

I would appear that ICEauthority has somehow messed with my permissions and mixed me up with being ROOT user rather than just normal privaliges user. This seems to indicat that this may be the case. I found it linked to on the Ubuntu forum.

Anyone able to help me 'recreate' a valid ICEauthority without screwing up my ROOT user?

advice apprecated.

EDIT

Ok... appear to have it fiixed.

I found the answer here

$chown user -R /home/user (where user is obviously your user name - run as su - ) and I am now able to log in as my preferred user name.

I still have not fixed ROOT as I am unable to log in as ROOT. It says 'unable to authenticate user' at the login screen.

Would still like tips on that if anyone has any pointers.

Hi,

I fixed my problem by ' su - ' ing in the secondary login I created (new user) and entering:

$chown user -R /home/user

So, I actually entered: chown user -R /home/spinifex as su - and I am now able to log in.

I have not looked at fixing my 'actual' root user login yet as I do not have the time but I believe it is a different problem.

Follow the 'here' link in the previous post (it goes to a Mac forum and discusses almost the identical problem from 2004 for MacOSX).

I just installed Fedora a few days ago and try to do familiarize myself with it until I come up with changing my home folder's name, from Qwerty to Fedora.

Everything works fine. But when i rebooted my pc it says, "Could not update ICEauthority file home/Fedora/.ICEauthority.

I tried everything that were in this post but to no avail. I think (as a beginner), the problem arose when I changed my home folder's name, is my thought right? If I typed-out chown Fedora -R /home/Fedora, it says, "chown: cannot access '/home/Fedora': No such file or directory >>>Quite mixed up with this since when I log in it would prompt me of "Could not update home/Fedora/.ICEauthority"

What if I revert my home folder's name again to the previous, Qwerty, would it be okay again? If it is going to be okay, can someone please tell me how. Thanks.

EDIT

Got it! Changed back my home folder's name to Qwerty.

@Turbo root login to the full graphical desktop has been turned off since f9 so that is not a mistake but the expected behaviour now several threads about it if you search for them

The same problem

I have the same problem of can't update file...........About the solution that your mention, i was created a new user use the dvd in recovery mode. this is the list of steps:

chroot /mnt/sysimage

su -

chown Jonathan -R /home/Jonathan

In this point fedora shows some messages and it shows that the operation can't realize (or something similar).

Then i restart the system and load fedora but the problem persist and i can't entry with my user or with the user that i was created. In both cases fedora show the messages "Could not update ICEautority file".

Please help me because i am not know how do.

Note: I have the same problem that is in this topic: http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=215141

Thanks

Thanks! This thing worked for me after trying a whole bunch of other stuff from other forums. Ubuntu 10.10 - choose 'recovery mode' at Grub boot screen and login as root.
