Well I had a question but I am starting to think your mention of Quardo cards not working/being supported may be my issue. (I have a QuardoFX 1500m which is based off the 7900GS core)

I had no problems in FC9 however now I am running into a libg file not being found and I can not enable desktop effects but the nvidia controls work fine. I also can not use 3d obviously.

I did the Add/Remove Programs method but I will double check with your method.

edit: Ah, I follow what's going on now. My original post in this thread is irrelevant.

I'll go back to wondering why the colours for all videos that I play are ... just.. yerk (purple grass and tree leaves, for example)

This is the Error I am getting. I am starting to wish I could have installed from the DVD and not the LiveCD.

Update: I uninstalled all associated rpms. Rebooted. Installed and reconfigured. Rebooted and it seems to be working fine for 3d progams now. bg fade and windows are still choppy. CPU still seems to be used excessively but 3d accel is working. Also changed some "typos" in first paragraph.

Summary:
glxinfo and nvidia display settings indicate Direct Rendering is on and working. Everything runs slower than the "nv" driver. ie: glxgears ~800x600 ~700FPS but one core in cpu is pegged at 98%. Fading background is at best choppy. Movement of windows jittery. No 3d programs work properly. In contrast "nv" is actually faster at most of these things that will run. It appears to be 3d accel is not being used even though reported as available. Specs and files follow:

I have tried several configurations of xorg.conf. I recently added the AIGLX option and the Composite extension with no changes. I have also attempted a very basic single head setup with the same results.

Please forgive my nubidity. I just installed Fedora 10 x86 64 today, and have no previous experience with it (I have used Ubuntu a little bit, but not much). I have an Nvidia GeForce 6800. Should I use the first code listed in your entry? I also want to make sure I understand what these commands are. su means to become root, right? Then rpm and yum are like apt get in Ubuntu? reboot seems to be self explanatory.

GeForce 8400M GS - no love

I'm running F10 on a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop with a GeForce 8400M GS video card (128 MB, I think, but the current nVidia site lists it as 256 MB - not sure).

I followed the instructions on the first page of this thread - GeForce 6,7,8.9 and 200 series with akmod option. The driver seems to install OK and the screen resolution looks correct. The color depth is better than prior to the install. However, when I drag windows around the desktop, motion is VERY jerky and I get lots of redraws and shredded windows. I also cannot enable desktop effects through Gnome - I haven't tried to install compiz for obvious reasons.

Looking at the xorg.conf, things don't seem right, but I cannot seem to change anything as when I do followed by a reboot, everything is back as it is here. Also, if I simply log out I end up at a black screen that is unresponsive to anything but a hard power down (press the power button). Below is the xorg.conf as I have it now:

Code:

Notice the line around VideoCard0 that has the driver listed as "vesa" If I change this to "nvidia" and log out, I end up at the black screen that is unresponsive and requires a power down. If I reboot, it goes back to "vesa".

I've also tried running nvidia-settings and I get an error message stating "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver." So, I try running nvidia-xconfig as root (as suggested in the error dialog) and it executes, I get a new xorg.conf, but as soon as I reboot, I'm back here.

I was able to get this working fine under F9 using Leigh's protocol for that one.

HELP!!

-Kirk

I tried copying in my xorg.conf from my F9 installation. When I get to the log in screen, the resolution looks like around 640x480 - huge cursor and huge dialog. I also saw this after my first shot at the instructions in Post #1 here, but I got around it - I forget how. 8^(

It's a nvidia driver problem. Look at this to get your desktop run better: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118088

And this thread : http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=115724

I would try 180.06 or 180.08 drivers where this issue is fixed(claimed by nvidia team)
I currently have 180.08 and that is better than 177.82. That driver should be pulled from repo. Every 86xx series owner out there have this issue.

When it comes to xorg.conf re-write that will happen if you try to uninstall akmod-nvidia and install kmod-nvidia or nvidia drivers from nvidia.com. You have to remove akmod-scripts still in your system that tries to build a nvidia module duiring boot. If the scripts fail then it resets your xorg.conf to nv,vesa.

Here is what i did: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...&postcount=172

You could try this and see if it helps.

Hi I followed your guide on installing the akmod drivers instead of the kmod drivers since they didn't work either with my computer. I have and nVidia GeForce 6100 and when I go to enable the stock desktop effects it tells me it can't. When I try to run glxinfo I get the following:
Code:
[Ricardo@DevilHunter ~]$ glxinfo

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Segmentation fault
[Ricardo@DevilHunter ~]$
and when I try to run glxgears:
Code:
[Ricardo@DevilHunter ~]$ glxgears
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
[Ricardo@DevilHunter ~]$
Here is my xorg.conf file:
Code:
[Ricardo@DevilHunter ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# Xorg configuration created by livna-config-display

Section "Files"

Can you help me please? thanks in advance!!

Compiz-Fusion is working, but I have some application rendering problems. Certain applicatioins, gftp and Ooffice do not display the text in certain fields of their windows. In gftp for example, the directory listings are blank unless I stretch the window and then briefly I can read the directory listing. Other applications like emacs, gnome-terminal and gnome-commander work fine, also firefox which I am using now.
Is there any history of this issue and thread that can lead me to a solution?
This is running on:
F10
GeForce MX 4000 64mg vram
96xx nvidia via the DM scripts
I am running the default compiz w/o wobbly windows, at 32 bit.
