Question previous xorg config before applying F11 compiz preparation

Hi,

Could someone recall what was the original xorg.conf "Files" section before preparing for compiz?
My X11 server has some troubles: when switching "displays/terminals" with Ctr + Alt + F[1-6] I cannot get back the graphical interface (X mode 5 I guess).

many thanks,
Dan

Post noticed that the text plugin is missing in compiz

It seems like there is a problem with the "text plugin" in the provided compiz build.
Here is what I get from compiz-manager:

Code:
$ compiz-manager
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 10de:0200 (rev a3) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1280x1024) to maximum 3D texture size (4096): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.

Nvidia lies in non-free section. Try
Code:
yum search nvidia --enablerepo=rpm*g

Exclamation my whole F11 install is good for the recycle bin again

I tried to discover what was compiz capable. Unfortunately I used several compiz configuration interfaces (GL Gnome, Compiz Configuration, Desktop effects). As always, sometime you reach a point where the interface is flawed and it corrupts the data in the files. That's really bad because everything is based on files in the ancestor of Linux... One should rely on the interfaces to configure the files and not fiddle with both interfaces AND files, otherwise there is a risk of data corruption...

In my opinion, to handle compiz in F11 there are several options :
1/ Low system compromizing risk : stick to the basic effects activated by the "Desktop Effects" interface

2/ Medium system compromizing risk: use the compiz-fusion icon tool along with the compiz configuration panel. Personaly, I would first disable the effects in the "Desktop Effects" interface first.

3/ High system compromizing risk: fiddle with all compiz targated interfaces like GL Gnome, Livna, Compiz configuration, Desktop Effects and end up like me with no more gtk-window container (cannot move the windows anymore), no possiblity to switch back to X with Ctrl + Alt + F[1-6]...

4/ Ultra high system compromizing risk: fiddle with all the interfaces plus the config files. This is the fastest way to need a new install...

Good luck,
Dan

Nokia, you still try to contaminate people with testing repos?
I think you know that there will be dependency issues later on between stable and testing...

Well, you're a bit exageratting. A new install isn't necessary just because you know a few basic things about your OS. As far as compiz is concerned, you only need
Code:
 su
rm -fvr /home/*/.config/compiz && rm -vfr /home/*/.cache/compizconfig

In theory there's a greater chance to get one of your programs temporarily broken. In practice the more up-to-date you are - fewer problems are left unsolved. You do the math.

And FWIW, I wouldn't recommend something untested. Need something rock solid ? Go for Debian 5 and see how it handles your latest hardware. Also, enjoy the latest in software development - set your clock a few years back that is.

As time goes by, many come to these forums looking for help. Very often, their answer lies in the testing repos, but I'm sure you'll carefully advise them to wait a few weeks until their update is deemed stable by a superior entity.

We are both right and wrong

You seem pretty skilled in linux. I have a 1000 points question for you:
Now that gdm-restart is not supported anymore, how do you control the X server? Every time you do a test involving X you restart the machine? There must be a way of shuting down X server and fixing some configuration and then restarting X, isn't it? May be the answer is simple I just don't know.

Solution 1---- See http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...65&postcount=4

Solution 2-----SSH in from another machine, init 3 - init 5

The DonZap option does not work on my platform, already tested. Moreover it is a kill signal, not a shutdown.

SSH in from another machine is too complicated for just a simple X restart and you also need a second machine.

If there is no other option I will practice "kill pid", old ways still work
