Only in New York
Well, not necessarily but....
My wife had her wallet stolen Friday. After the usual frantic cancelling of cards, guarding against ID theft and all that good stuff, she resigned herself to having to replace her license, etc. etc.
So, today, in the mail, there's a letter for her with no return address. In there is everything but the cash and wallet.
She believes she saw the thief (that it was someone masquerading as building maintenance at a dance/exercise studio where she teaches) and she had said, he had seemed such a kindly guy.
Whether he simply took the cash and threw it away, or he, or perhaps, she said, his girfriend, decided to do it, or whether it was found by someone else, we will never know.
Anyway, it did seem rather a nice thing to do, especially if it was the thief who did it. Shucks, the postage was about a dollar.
Anyway, we found it either amusing or touching, we're not sure which.

Just a nasty thought, but if you wanted to use the ID and have a period of time before the owner took action, returning the info you'd copied might be a good way. I'd still cancel the cards and watch the CB closely for a couple of months.

You were touched, they were amused. To live in New York and not be mugged is like living in England and not being Labored. (you know... like living in Chicago and not being Daley'd) :-)
Now you've got a tale to tell while gathered round the family hearth at the coming holiday.

@bob, oh, yes, the cards were already cancelled and proper places notified--the three credit agencies are the main ones.
However, to her delight, they also returned her Hello Kitty store card, where she had bonus points and is close to getting something for free.
No she wasn't mugged, thank goodness, it was property theft.
However, as per your NYC comment,
"Hey I moved here [to NYC] 2 weeks ago, and someone broke in my car last night."
"You're kidding me!!!! Wow. What took 'em so long????"

Should not touch inside the package, send it to the Police for fingerprinting...
They probably won't, no one got killed.

By the time it goes through the postoffice, I think that is pretty useless. Anyway, of course, it's too late as she frantically searched through it for the Hello Kitty store card. That thought occurred to me too, but, as this is NY, and I have had enough friends who have suffered from robbery and burglary, fingerprinting in this case probably would be useless.

TBH I don't know what to make of it. However I heard this before from my friend who visited some place and had his wallet stolen. He got it back in mail sans the money of-course.
For the person to understand the hassle one has to go through getting all the cards/ids duplicated is appreciable, but... I don't know.
Perhaps it was indeed a good gesture, OTOH since you canceled most of the cards he was prolly spooked (or found it useless to hold them) and returned it anyway. 50-50

I have a friend who had pretty much the same thing happen to her, and she lives in a small podunk town in Iowa.

Note the first two words of my first post. I admitted that the title was deceptive.
However, you know we New Yorkers, always trying to hype it up.

Oops, first three words. Whatever. Our schools don't teach math that well either.
I really shouldn't post after 23:00.

Our crooks have reverted to simply beating up old people and taking everything. Not enough street cred in breaking into a car these days.

I know what you mean, ibbo.
I remember a few cases here like that - example: an 80yo pensioner beaten and handbag snatched. The thief could have just taken the handbag, but no, he had to beat the poor old lady - severely - first. What is wrong with these people?
