Installing Updates stopped display driver?

This is not really an installation question since I don't know what happened. I've had trouble with my video driver ever since I installed 9. With the help of this forum and some abuse from the nVidia forum I finally got it working at the right resolution but not in widescreen mode. I'm not sure this is causing the current problem. On Saturday I gave the system permission to install the listed upgrades. It worked well all day. This morning the display flashes when it gets the login and stops at the command prompt. I've rebooted three times with he same results. I'm pretty sure the video driver is messing with something, but I don't know that. I made no program or operating system changes other than the updates. All I know for certain is I'm stuck using the piece of Vista garbage until I can get my Linux computer running again. HELP!

Hi, did it install kernel 2.6.27? if so your going to need to update your graphics driver, if you used the .run from nvidia, then go download this one:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...32_180.06.html

and run that, it should fix it.

Kernel 2.6.27.5-37.fc9.x86_64

I'm not sure if it updated the kernel. The current kernel is 2.6.27.5-37.fc9.x86_64.

I did the previous installations using Gnome. I don't know the steps required to download the file using the command prompt. I can download the driver using this computer and copy it to the linux computer but I'm not sure exactly how to that either.

Ok, yes that is a new kernel. on your grub menu, do you still have the previous one listed (2.6.26.x)? If so, boot into it. just to download the file, then re-boot into the new kernel, then install the driver. This will have to be done on each kernel update due to the way nvidia drivers install.

THIS is the file you need: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...64_180.06.html (64 bit, I gave you 32bit before)

Fixed

I'm back on Gnome. I'll download the driver. Now I know how to handle this next time.

Thanks

and you will need to reinstall that *.run file not just for EVERY kernel update but also for EVERY xorg/X11 update too.
