Suitable Linux Printer

Hi all

I am looking for a printer that works well in linux/fedora
Criteria is

What i need/like
1.) Cheaper is better
2.)Inks must be refillable, ie with a syringe/kit
3.)preferably with a scanner but not life or death

The printer is mainly for letters etc, anything else, printing photos, wireless, card slots , talking to me is not needed, i just want a printer that works, and wont cost a arm and a leg in refils

Thanks

Dave

I'm partial to Canon myself, but not all are supported, so check models carefully. My PIXMA iP5000 works perfectly with the Gutenprint driver and has individual ink tanks (5 thereof) plus does photo and disc printing. I did what you want to - bought bulk ink, syringes and do my own refills. Alas, the iP5000 is superseded and I don't know what the driver status is for the replacement model (iP5200?).

Checkout LinuxPrinting.org for details of what drivers work with what printers, although the database isn't fully up to date.

Also, for HP printers/all-in-ones, checkout HPLIP.

HTH

PS: I'm kinda hoping we wup your asses tonight in the Wallabies vs. England game Although I may regret that tomorrow .....

If it were me, I'd go for a cheap mono laser printer if it's just for docs. I think Brother have good Linux support.

+1

The Samsung ML-2010 is a great home use mono laser printer, and is *very* cheap, and you can buy toner refill kits for about $10 on ebay etc. It "just works" with Linux - no software needed, just plug it in and off you go.

I use a Epson R200 which works great with linux , as for refilling , I consider it a waste of time as I can get generic cartridges cheap on Ebay ( 2 complete cartridge sets + two extra blacks cartridges= 14 cartridges for only £10 )

Actually, we have a Canon MP610 all-in-one connected to 'er indoors' G4 iBook, but it prints fine from my Linux machine with the Canon (downloadable) drivers and the updated PPD from here:

http://mp610.blogspot.com/2007/11/ne...-printing.html

I haven't got it to scan yet, but then I haven't really tried.

it's kinda application dependant
if you print a lot, get a laser with postscript
if you need a few color prints now and the and don't print that much, inkjet

I have had good luck with both Canon and Epson printers for inkjets and my only experience with the lasers is HP

I have had better luck refilling the Canon inkjet I worked with then the Epsons For some reason the Canon was more tolerant of sitting for a while and then picking back up. If you let a Epson sit the ink drys in the heads and can kill the printer. Oh, you can have them repaired but it costs more then a new printer. The Canon was a BJ something and worked surprising well.

You might be able to find an old printer on Craigslist I bought an old HP 8000 and it works great. I wanted the wide format. Tons of office stuff out there now with all the business slowing up.

That's my my 2 cents.
Best of Luck,
Pat Jr.

Surprisingly, any printer I've ever hooked up to a Linux machine has worked out of the box. But do you really need re-fillable? I get 20+ cartages for £2 for my printer. seriously, it can be cheaper without the re-fillers.

Im leaning towards a bottle fed printer/kit, as you can print and dont have to worry about ink running out, or changing cartriges, mess, ordering and buyng them etc, and of course cheap

Thanks everyone for your help i shall ponder for the next week or so, as im in no rush

Hello Wayne

If you read this, that Canon MP610 multi-function gets a positive write up in the Linux Format magazine this month.

Evidently, the drivers for the scanner are in the "Sane" development version.

The quote from the review is that "image quality is amazing"

Thanks for the heads-up! I'm going to have to get that going as it's a PIA scanning on the Mac and shoving the scans onto a USB stick!

Cheers

Wayne
