Setting preferred browser in gnome doesn't work. Fedora 9
When I click on an icon for a .html file in gnome (gnome-desktop-2.22.3-1.fc9.x86_64
) it frequently, (but not always), runs a window telling me that this is an executable text file and asking if I want to run it, display it's contents, or run in terminal. Firefox is set as my preferred browser and all .html files display a browser icon. Does anyone know how to make them always open in Firefox? Thanks, Kurt

Check your file association in System Settings.
Select Text
Select html
Should see in this order(default)
Konqueor
Firefox Web Browser
etc...

Thanks, you're thinking of setting the preferred apps: System->Preferences->Personal->Preferred applications? Done, a while ago, but, some .html files open in Firefox, whereas others bring up this dialog box. Kurt

Well, I've tried four times just now, to load a screen shot into this post, but it just won't display. I don't understand about "that weblink".

It's a permissions issue. Right-click on those files, go to "Properties" then the "Permissions" tab. You'll see that "Allow executing file as program" is checked.

Here is the dialog you want to get to, under right-click->Properties->Permissions:

I have seen a lot of text files that I've downloaded have execute permissions.
Incidentally, some Web servers are configured to use the "x-bit hack," whereby the execute permission is set to determine which .html files should be parsed by the PHP engine.
