Up2date problem in FC2?

I think I have an updated FC2 system. However, the 'up2date' icon on the taskbar still comes up as a red exclamation point (after a little while). When I point to it, it says that there are 5 updates waiting. When I click on it, it reports only that "kernel-doc" needs updating, but the display looks a little funny in that it shows:
  • A package name of "kernel-doc"
  • A version installed of "kernel-doc-2.6.5-1.358".
  • 5 versions of "kernel-doc" are available.

However, if I run 'up2date', it checks the system and downloads needed headers and then reports that the system is up2date. How do I fix the taskbar icon for 'up2date' so that it doesn't falsely report that an update is needed??

I thought up2date was using yum "behind the scenes"? In the up2date window, it shows a yum command that (I think) it's using to pull the list of updates needed. I assumed from that that it was using yum in some manner.

My problem is that the red exclamation point comes back after a little time and yum tells me I am up-to-date.

Confused,

up2date uses YUM and APT to keep your system updated, however, up2date uses a seperate configuration to YUM. SO, when you update with YUM, you are checking certain servers (specified in /etc/yum.conf) for updates and when you run up2date, you are checking the servers specified in /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources. These servers may be different, so you may get different results when you run YUM and up2date.

Some tips on specifying servers for up2date are noted at http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=20426

Cheers,
Dragon

I had this Problem yesterday, and i did the Update many time and the System tells me that my System is Up2date.
then after some trys , i get the Update, it is a Problem in the Mirrors. Try to click on the Icon many time till you will get the Update. and then everything will be okay.
or try as all said here , just update your System with Yum and then this will be solved.

The suggestion seems to be that the "kernel-doc" package changed to being a "noarch" package and that this change confused both yum and up2date (thus the reason they report that the system is up-to-date). The fix seems to be to remove the "kernel-doc" package, download the latest version of "kernel-doc", and install that. Hopefully, that will get up2date back in-sync on this package. So far, it seems to be working.

Up2date problem in FC2?

I have similar problem. Only mine is that after running yum update, my computer hangs when it is about to display graphics. All the "loads" go thru successfully but before the logon screen, I get the "hour-glass" icon and then nothing happens after that.

Everything was ok until I did the yum update this morning, in response to the red RHN icon.

I am now stuck as I am not able to use my computer.

Specs:

Dell Latitude C600
ATI Mobility M3
128MB RAM
40GB HDD

nkatal,

I think your issue may be related to the update that was applied rather than up2date itself. I'd recommend starting a new thread as you will probably get more people viewing the post.

cheers,

Dragon

I have just solved the same problem (only different packages were reported as new). I did "yum clean all" (as root), and then "yum update" picked up the same new packages shown by the red notification icon of up2date. I'm sure that up2date would have installed them ok this time, too, since it also uses yum.
After the update finished, the icon went to the normal blue.
I haven't modified the original up2date configuration /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources -- better keep it standard like that until absolutely needed.

HTH,
Vesko

When I have that problem, I uncheck all but one server, preferably one not at the top. Don't know why it works, but it often does. If not, wait 10 minutes and try again.
