Question Lost GNOME workspaces

After my last software update I found that my workspaces were limited to four when I was logged into a GNOME session. In the course of repeated attempts to increase this to eight I instead managed to lose all of my workspaces. That is to say, I am left with the logon workspace alone. How can I re-establish my workspaces and how can I regain the ability to increase the number of workspaces available to me? I am running the 64-bit version of Fedora 9 and I do not suffer the same deprivation when I run KDE, but I really wish to use GNOME.

Multiple problems.

Actually, it's worse than I thought. Every time I open an application, my web-browser closes.
