Requiem for a Forum

What happens if moderators don't keep up with spammers on a forum ...... follow the link below and see for yourself (caution: material may cause offence):

http://www.centosforums.org/

(Note: Don't confuse the above with the main CentOS forum run by www.centos.org - they're quite different).

Almost as bad as bsdforums.org. Gotta wonder why the site owners continue to pay for hosting.

My guess given my brief look at that forum is that you are totally correct. Pretty soon that forum will start showing up at the top of the list if one were to search for porn in Google or another search engine.

It is true, though. It's laughable. I agree with those who have stated above that I have absolutely no clue why somebody would continue paying for the hosting charges (perhaps it was a five-year deal or something).

I don't know, maybe the host needs porn links.

It might have been something like BSDforums, where the admins simply abandoned it. What disturbs me, and will probably disturb the CentOS people is that it will be connected to CentOS and no doubt, comes up in searches for the system.

I haven't even looked at bsdforums anymore. For the first two months or so, several of us at daemonforums would go there and tell people to post on daemonforums insteads, but eventually, we all just stopped. What made it more obnoxious is that the spammers started posting their stuff as replies to existing threads--so if you were subscribed to a thread, you got spam. I had to go and unsubscribe most of my threads.

As for these CentOs forums linked above--hopefully, most people start with CentOS.org and don't even find that. I never knew about it till today.

Hopefully people start at CentOS.org, but if you google centos forums, centosforums.org is the number two result

I just sent an email to one of the folks at CentOS to see if they want to do anything about it or not.

Hmm, Scott, given the number of post a spammer had - 461...and he was automatically advanced as a senior member - which puzzled me for a bit - I sincerely doubt there's stil anyone online. Otherwise they would simply taken the site offline or stopped user registration and banned any spammers around.

Wow, I thought those posts at centosforums were legit. When I saw "Horny Hermaphrodites" I just assumed they were discussing a new Ubuntu release. I'm so naive...
