    Apple wireless keyboard and mighty mouse

    Hi all. I have a shiny new apple wireless keyboard and mighty mouse.
    I was able to get them working in FC9 using a targa USB-bluetooth dongle.
    Tools used hcitool and hidd. Conf files /etc/sysconfig/bluetooth and /etc/bluetooth/hci.conf
    and dont forget to use Gnome login to do the initial pairing of the bluetooth devices so that
    bluetooth-applet causes the pairing applet to save the bonded key.
    Great thats all great and the mouse works fine and most keys on the keyboard work fine except:
    Keyboard fn key (lower left key) unseen by xev at all.
    This kills all my multimedia keys I want to use and (actually since I use emacs I want to swap the fn and ctrl keys so my pinkee finder does not get tired).
    In groking other sites I think I understand that the events generated by the keyboards fn key are
    actually acpi events? which are not picked up and handed to the X event loop.
    I may have the terminology wrong but the concept makes sense.

    Does anyone know how or the appropriate way to capture these and hand them to xev so that I can get my fn key.
    And or any way to see the events spewing from my USB bluetooth dongle just to get an idea that the fn key is at least generating some sort of data onto the serial bus???

    Further investigation

    Well no great answers yet but a few more clues.
    If I cat /proc/bus/input/devices I see that the device file for the wireless keyboard is 6.
    My original wired keyboard still hooked up is 3.
    So if whilst in Xorg I can open a terminal and
    # cat /dev/input/event6
    Then I press my fn key and some data spews out.
    So it is my opinion then that at least the key is alive if not handled correctly.
    The above test was run using a Driver "kbd" within xorg.conf.

    I tried switching the xorg.conf to use an Driver "evdev" and I am able to use the keyboard
    within x but still no fn key. And yes in KDE I went to system properties->regional->keyboard and set the type to evdev managed keyboard and us and mac variant to get my cursor keys back at least.
    Interestingly enough the eject button on the keyboard does fire a XF86Eject event when watching output of xev (but it is an independent key and does not require <fn> modifier).
    So it would appear to me that both kbd and evdev keyboard drivers for X are ignoring the fn key.
    I see rumors of xorg using HAL and that that may be a key but it seems to me
    that the evdev driver if so inclined could at least pick up the event for X.
    Any help here much appreciated as my shiny new keyboard is just too painful to use until I can get this key swapped with the <Ctrl> key.

    A little bit of help please..

    I am using an Apple keyboard and a Logitech bluetooth mouse are working! But don't work again after rebooting. I have to manually connect both. Can you explain how to make the connection 'permanent'
    I am running FC9 and I have no clue what I have to do in /etc/sysconfig/bluetooth or /etc/bluetooth/hci/conf to make this happen

    Thanks!

    In theory there is a service /etc/rc.d/init.d/bluetooth that reads the config file /etc/sysconfig/bluetooth.
    If you add
    HIDD_OPTIONS="--connect 00:1F:5B:F9:9B:44 --connect 00:1F:F3E:B2:13"
    HID_ENABLE=true
    replacing the device id's with your own, then the connections should happen on reboot.
    It is however my experience that reality is never what we expect.
    To get device ids man hciutil from command line.

    Thanks for all the help you fedora gurus....
    Not even a nibble?

    Sorry Verney, that was hcitool not hciutil.
    Also you might run hidd -list.
    My hci.conf looks like this but iy your mouse and keyboard are able to connect manually then
    the connect commands listed above should be enough.
    /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf
    # I ADDED THIS

    device 00:1F:5B:F9:9B:44 {
    name "Apple Wireless Keyboard";
    auth enable;
    encrypt enable
    }
    device 00:1F:F3E:B2:13 {
    name "Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse";
    auth enable;
    encrypt enable
    }

    Still no real answer here.
    I was able to remap lots of keys to make the keyboard usable for an old emacs dude.
    Here is my .Xmodmap
    e.g. xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap
    this solves most problems except lack of a "fn" key.
    Major keyboard remaps are as follows
    <Eject> buttonat top right becomes Delete
    <Command>-up,<Command>-down become PageUp and PageDown
    <Command>-left and <Command>-right become Home and End
    These remaps make the keyboard at least usable.
    Code:
    keycode   8 =
    keycode   9 = Escape
    keycode  10 = 1 exclam
    keycode  11 = 2 at
    keycode  12 = 3 numbersign
