The package manager bug

Hi, thanks to the help I got from this site I have managed to get fedora installed and up and running, I have being working my way though my book taking it step by step but on the 116th page I have hit another wall so am back with a second question

Apparently there is a well publicised bug with Fedora core 1 called the package manager bug. This bug in some way inhibits me from installing through the package manager. Now, also apparently, there is a update file:

http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linu...6/RPMS.updates

and the file is redhat-config-packages-1.2.7-1.noarch.rpm

I have installed other rpms before as part of the exercise in the book and know a little about dependencies etc but this one has me stumped.

I get a window that tells me that I have selected a package for removal that is dependant upon by a necessary system package, the package must be unselected before package removal can continue.

I have no idea what to do next

I know that its probably possible for me to update to a newer version of fedora but I dont want to yet until I have worked through the exercise in book in case anything is different. Also I have customised my space and dont want to lose it!

Can anyone help?

Smile I'm with you~

Hi Lucy!

I am trying to find the same answer as you, with the same problem, in the same book~Linux for Non-Geeks

Page 116 Fixing the Package Manager Bug, great book but-I wish he had a few more problem senerios to go with it~

I can not find the answer anywhere, and I have been looking and trying from this morning at 8 am- I also found out that a few things along the way are depended on that fix, so, a few things I was unable to do because of it~

I will be watching this thred for any answers-hopefully we can find them~

Aggie

Problems with your Package??

If you are a newcomer to Linux and Fedora you may or may not be familiar with the "apt" and "yum" package managers. They both work well but can be a little cryptic to a beginner.

Last week I installed a great new package manager (SMARTPM) that is GREAT at automatically solving package dependancies.

So go and GET SMART: http://smartpm.org/ ("Sorry bout that chief.." )

Looks like MANY others are also very happy with this PM: http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/sho...hlight=smartpm

SmartPM does run fast and even outperforms yum and apt. I like it.

I really am a newbie...

I downloaded the files i think i need from www.smartpm.org - Packages for Fedora Core 1, 2, and 3, and RedHat 7.3, 8 and 9 -Fedora Core 1 - then files:

smart-update-0.30.2-16.rhfc1.at.i386.rpm
smart-gui-0.30.2-16.rhfc1.at.i386.rpm
smart-0.30.2-16.rhfc1.at.i386.rpm

Were these the correct files?

I tried to install them by clicking on the icon in Nautilus but get an error message saying I have dependicies not installed. I guess this would go back to the original bug in FC1 RPM that I haven't been able to fix.

I then tried to install thru terminal but didn't have any luck. I'm really not sure what command I should use for what file. Also, these are .rpm files . Does that mean I will be able to use them at all (the FC1 RPM bug might prevent this?)

Would appreciate your thoughts. If I can't get over this bug I really can't see any option but to order another version (FC3?) and reinstall?

many thanks
