Solved: Working Connection No Longer working....ASW-108 New factor?

Hi again,

This problem has been fixed. Turns out it seems to be an issue with the on-board SiS900 LAN. I forgot that quite a while ago I installed an AirLink 10/100 NIC because I couldn't get this LAN function to work right. I now recall way back when it was a speed issue (couldn't get beyond 10 Mb/s). I just tried to work it again under F8 and it is pretty much non-functional (F8 can't seem to activate it). Another somewhat related issue was that a M/B firmware upgrade was with a version of the BIOS firmware (030308S on a PCChips M8120LR V5.0 for those keeping score that disabled the LAN Enable/Disable option (designed for the non-LAN version of the board). I retrograded the firmware and got back the LAN option, but obviously it really doesn't matter

My bad on both accounts (Lao To-tse...old man to those who don't know Chinese Thanks to anyone who "listened".

Cheers and happy computing

Steph

Hi all,

I have a Fedora8 system (ready to go to F9). The system (a slower Athlon 1400+, want to upgrade to a 2200+ as soon as I can get it online) uses a RealTek RTL-8139 LAN Chip (I think I remember reading somewhere that this chip may have some compatibility issues...might have been a different device

I've had this system connected recently (at different times) to both a D-Link and LinkSys 4-port wireless router. Both configs worked well. I needed to expand connectivity on my network and inserted an Airlink ASW-108 (8-port Switch) into the system and cannot seem to get my Fedora box to get out onto the network. My configuration has changed but I thought I had reconfigured the F8 networking "driver" to accommodate the changes. Apparently not quite right enough. To the ASW108 I have connected 2 other WinXP SP3 systems, a networked HP2200 LJ and a ReplayTV box (and teh F8, of course). To the wireless router (currently the LinkSys box) I have the ASW-108 and a wireless laptop . All seem to work well.

The typical messages I've been seeing include "Network unreachable" when I "ping" the gateway from the F8 box. The F8 box has been offline for a while so there are a few updates that need to be downloaded. However, even that comes back with a message such as "Unable to Retrieve software update" and something else about no connection (Duh!). Firefox can't get out either. The ASW-108 light for the F8 port is lit.

I've tried to configure the F8 LAN port manually similar to that of 1 of the WinXP boxes (with a different IP address, of course), as well as automatically, but it never seems to show up on the radar.

I'm open to any suggestions. I'm unsure if I've missed something in reconfiguring the F8 box or if it's H/W (the LinkSys box seems to need an occasional kick in the butt to get its attention....i.e. reset). In the meantime, I'm going to replace the LinkSys with the D-Link and see if that changes anything.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions....

Cheers...Steph
