Epson Photo RX640 printer problem getting to work.

Hi

I have an epson photo rx640 all in one printer which I am trying to use in fedora9 i386. Using the control centre I can print a test page ok but if I try to print a document the printer passes the paper and prints nothing.I had to download and install the drivers for this (the right ones I hope) pipslite-1.1.0-1.i386. As the correct ones were not with the distro. I now get the following troubleshoot output:

An error from selinux:
SELINUX is preventing pipslitelp (cups_t)
"write" to pipslitelp0 (var_run_t).

When I try xsane for the scanner I get 'no devices avaiable'

I would be grateful for any guidance on this.

for my rx425 i used the cups printer driver from epkowa (epson) not the lite one or the lpd one.

as well as the iscan application for scanning - seems to work better than xsane.

I have tried to find epkowa drivers for the rx640 for use with fedora but have so far had no success. Applying a search engine to 'fedora epson rx640' keeps bringing me back to the lite ones. If you know any differently please let me know where I will find the correct drivers.

yeah you're right, they only seem to do the lite version for the rx640 for fedora6 (althought that doesn't usually matter, they work on centos 5.2 and fedora7 at least) not sure what the "lite" difference is really.....

I have made no progress with this. I can only assume from the error message I quoted earlier:
...........................................
An error from selinux:
SELINUX is preventing pipslitelp (cups_t)
"write" to pipslitelp0 (var_run_t).
...........................................
The problem appears to be with selinux not permitting this action. I have used the same drivers on Opensuse and both the printer and scanner work fine. I have read a fair bit on selinux, but I have to say that I do not understand most of what I have read. Can anyone advise me on this, in basic terms please.

Hi Percy,

I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX680 that refuses to print and I have not even gotten to the point of trying the scanner yet. Unfortunately, I am not overly familiar with Linux so I really don't know what I am doing. I am running Fedora9 and have tried to install the printer using the facilities available in the GUI. I took a look at the Epson web site but found nothing that hinted at Linux. My Epson also passes the pages through the printer and prints nothing on them.

Hi Sawdust2

I cannot offer much in the way of advice but you will find that drivers can be a problem in linux. Try googling your problem or error messages you will be surprised what it turns up. I would also suggest that you try the epkowa site as this is where you will find some epson drivers. I no longer use fedora and never did obtain the right drivers here but have found that my printer and scanner work fine using mepis.

Best of luck

Thanks Percy for your reply. I downloaded a Ubuntu ISO yesterday and burned a CD. I ran that CD in the Live CD mode and installed my Epson printer just to see what would happen. Lo and Behold the printer worked, first time, just like it knew what it was doing so I know there are drivers available. I am giving serious thought to switching over to Ubuntu but then what other problems might I encounter?. Again, thanks for the reply. I will look into the epkowa site and see if I can find what I need.

My RX560 suffers from the same error and message. However, it worked fine with Fedora 8, so there must be an issue with the driver and F10. Also, If I delete and reconfigure the printer, it will work for that session, until I reboot.

I have to agree with you on the fact that there is an issue with the driver but unfortunately I am not smart enough with Linux to know what to do. I did download both the full of Fedora 11 Beta and the Live CD version. The live CD version has the same problem that Fedora 9 has. It just keeps spitting out blank pages until the tray is empty. No print at all. Ubunto on the other hand worked the first time I configure it so I think I might be making a switch to Ubuntu.
