fedora crashes

I just installed fedora 9 on my thinkpad laptop. It seems to be working fine but for some reason when I open proc/acpi/ibm the screen turns black and I have to reboot. Why does this happen?

i quit fusion-icon from my startup session and it solved the crashes problem.

What do you mean "open proc/acpi/ibm" ???
/proc/acpi/ibm is a directory in a pseudo-file system that represents kernel data structures. What EXACTLY are you doing that causes the problem ?

The problem will no doubt trace to an issue in the thinkpad driver (but I'm not seeing it)..

I meaned that I did
$ cd proc/acpi/ibm
and the system crashed.

Very strange that a cd to the directory would cause such a problem. Thanks for clarifying
