Trouble Specifying A Preferred Web Browser

I've installed Fedora 9 and am trying to use Firefox as my browser preference. So far I cannot click on a link in another application and have the browser open, even though when I go to System->Preferences->Personal->Preferred Applications the Internet tab indicates that Firefox is my preferred browser. I tried changing to "Custom" with "firefox %s" in the "Command:" box but that did not work either, I could not get that choice to "stick", seems the only button in the dialog is "Close", there is no "Apply" button and when I hit Close then reopen the dialog it is back at Firefix, not Custom, and I still cannot click on a link and get Firefox to come up. I also notice that the radio button choices in the dialog, "Open link with web browser default", etc. etc. are greyed out and nothing I do enables me to choose one.

No doubt I am missing something obvious. What is it?
