Hidden kernel options in 'make menuconfig'?

I need to compile a kernel with a module under Networking -> Wireless called "Software MAC add-on to the IEEE 802.11 networking stack". I cannot find this in the kernel sources for Fedora 9. I can, however, find the module in a vanilla kernel from kernel.org.

Is this module somehow hidden in the menuconfig in the Fedora 9 sources? If this module is not available in Fedora 9, how can I compile from the kernel.org sources?

Any help on this issue will be much appreciated.

In "make menuconfig", press the "/" (slash) key to search for e.g. "MAC". Find the option, and make a note of its dependencies. Then *enable* those dependencies.

Edit: Oops:
Code:
rpm -qi --changelog kernel | grep -A5 -B5 -i softmac
* Tue Mar 11 2008
- the scheduled ieee80211 softmac removal

Thanks brebs, that explains it. I'm still lost though. Should I try to patch a new kernel by reverting the softmac removal diff? Or is there a way to compile straight from kernel.org?

First of all, *why* do you need the module?

Can recompile the kernel, sure - look at kernels on koji. Download the .src.rpm and edit its .spec file in the usual way for an rpm recompilation. Kernels are more complicated than other packages though.

I need the module for testing packet injecting on the iwl4965 driver.

I'll give this a go. I read on the Fedora wiki that compiling kernels from git was discouraged from Fedora 8. Last time I compiled a kernel was on Red Hat version 5.something in 1998 so I'm a bit rusty ;-)
